Nephrology - Research


 

Faculty research interests encompass a broad range of basic science and clinical topics in pediatric nephrology. These projects currently include the study of several renal conditions, including renal salt and water handling, autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI), growth failure in chronic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, and pediatric renal transplantation.

All faculty members are involved in collaborative research with pediatric surgery to examine immunosuppression regimens and outcomes in pediatric renal transplantation.

Dr. Melissa Cadnapaphornchai’s research in ADPKD includes studies on the management of hypertension in children with ADPKD, a single center interventional trial designed to assess the effect of pravastatin on renal and cardiovascular disease progression in children with ADPKD, and examination of the role of the angiopoeitin gene as a modifier of disease severity in ADPKD. Dr. Cadnapaphornchai is also the principal investigator for an international multicenter interventional trial of new pharmacologic treatments for children with congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. This project is complemented in the laboratory by basic science studies of the mechanisms of renal salt and water handling in various disease states. Dr. Cadnapaphornchai also collaborates with colleagues from the adult nephrology division in the study of urinary markers to predict acute kidney injury in children undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass.

Dr. Douglas Ford is involved in research ethics, compliance, and oversight as a Co-Chair for the Colorado Multiple Institutional Review Board of the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Dr. Gary Lum is involved in collaborative studies with the North American Pediatric Renal Trials and Collaborative Studies to examine the effect of growth hormone treatment in children with chronic renal insufficiency.
