Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Children's Hospital Colorado
The Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition offers a wide variety of clinical services for children with digestive diseases, liver and pancreas disorders, and complex nutritional problems, both in our community and from out of state.
Services are offered at Children's Hospital Colorado, metro and regional clinics in Colorado, and a regional clinic in Montana.

On-Campus Services -- Clinics

Pediatric Gastroenterology Clinic

Clinics are held daily in the Outpatient Pavilion (2nd floor) at Children's Colorado. Initial consultative services and follow-up care are available. The latest advances in diagnosis, treatment, and management of pediatric gastrointestinal diseases are available in this clinic. Clinic support staff include six GI clinical nurses and one inflammatory bowel disease/nutrition support clinical nurse specialist, four registered dietitians, and two social workers. Diagnostic services are coordinated through the Procedure Center, Radiology, and the Outpatient Laboratory. Opportunities exist for participation in clinical research studies and clinical trials.

Pediatric Liver Center/Liver Transplantation

Clinics are held Monday and Thursday mornings in the Outpatient Pavilion (2nd floor) at Children's Colorado. This multidisciplinary clinic is staffed by six board-certified Pediatric Transplant Hepatologists, Pediatric Surgeons, and Transplant Surgeons. Initial consultative services and follow-up care are available for children with disorders of the liver and bile ducts. The latest advances in diagnosis, treatment, and management of pediatric liver diseases are available in this clinic. Complete liver transplantation services are available in the region's only Pediatric Liver Transplantation program. Long-term follow up of children who have received intestinal or multivisceral transplants is coordinated through this clinic. Clinic support staff includes two Liver clinical nurses, two Liver Transplant coordinators, four registered dietitians, and two social workers. Diagnostic services are coordinated through the Procedure Center, Radiology, and the Outpatient Laboratory. Opportunities exist for participation in clinical research studies and clinical trials.

Nutrition Services Clinic

Comprehensive, coordinated nutrition services are directed by board-certified pediatricians with subspecialty training and experience in pediatric nutrition. Registered dietitians, trained and certified in pediatrics, contribute their expertise to children with routine nutritional needs and more complicated feeding problems secondary to chemotherapy, digestive disorders, or other medical problems.

Gastrointestinal Eosinophilic Diseases Program

This multidisciplinary program is located at Children's Colorado. Children with eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs) are provided state-of-the-art evaluation and care by a team composed of pediatric gastroenterologists, allergists, behavioral health and feeding specialists, and nutritionists. Care is coordinated by a physician assistant and nurse. Patients are provided with opportunities to participate in clinical research studies.

Intestinal Rehab Clinic

This multidisciplinary program is located at Children's Colorado. Children with intestinal failure due to a variety of causes, such as short bowel syndrome, intestinal motility disorders, and congenital defects of absorption, are provided state-of-the-art care by a team of pediatric gastroenterologists, clinical nurse specialists, social workers, and nutritionists. Patients are provided with opportunities to participate in clinical research studies.

Weight Management Clinic - Lifestyles Influencing Fitness and Eating (formerly GoodLife2 Clinic)

This multidisciplinary program for adolescents who are overweight is located at Children's Colorado, and provides state-of-the-art coordinated care by a team of pediatric gastroenterologists, clinical nurse specialists, social workers, and nutritionists. Care is coordinated by a nurse. Patients are provided with opportunities to participate in clinical research studies.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Referral Clinic

Children’s Colorado Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Referral Clinic provides a multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art, family-centered approach to the diagnosis and management of IBD in children, and to advancing knowledge through research. This program is located at Children’s Colorado and evaluates children with suspected or complicated IBD. For those referred for second opinions as well as those seeking ongoing care, an emphasis is placed on close communication with the referring provider.

All the health care professionals are from Children’s Colorado, Aurora and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. The team consists of pediatric doctors with expertise in gastroenterology, surgery, pathology, radiology, as well as registered dietitians, behavioral health specialists, social workers, pediatric nurses and research coordinators.

We offer a complete spectrum of endoscopic procedures including endoscopy, colonoscopy, enteroscopy, and video capsule endoscopy, as well as imaging techniques including MR enterography. We also provide endocrine, rheumatology, and immunology evaluation with pediatric specialists. 

In addition to clinical care, the program conducts clinical and laboratory based research, quality improvement, and teaching and publishing activities.

Aerodigestive Program

This multispecialty program involves specialists from Pulmonary, ENT, GI, Nutrition, and Feeding Specialists. The goal is to provide an expert, multidisciplinary approach to children with airway/breathing complaints that may relate to feeding or digestive problems.

Celiac Disease

The Center for Celiac Autoimmunity specializes in the screening and diagnosis of celiac disease and is available for consultation. The center provides long-term care and management of children with celiac disease, including patient education and support. The goal of treatment is to improve patient quality of life and prevention of long-term complications.

 

On-Campus Services -- Diagnostics

GI Procedure Unit

The GI Procedure Unit, located in the Children's Hospital Colorado Procedure Center on the 1st floor of the hospital, has two fully equipped endoscopy rooms designed especially for children and staffed by pediatric anesthesiologists as needed. There is a separate room for procedures that do not require sedation such as breath tests, video capsule endoscopy, and pH or pH/impedance testing. The unit operates Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. After-hours procedures are performed in the hospital operating room. Specialized procedures performed in this unit include:

  • Breath hydrogen testing
  • Colonoscopy
  • Endoscopy of the upper GI tract 
  • ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography)
  • Esophageal pH monitoring and impedance/pH monitoring 
  • Esophageal stricture management (dilation, injection, stenting)
  •  Gastrostomy tube change
  • Liver biopsy
  • Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement
  • Proctosigmoidoscopy
  • Sigmoidoscopy - flexible
  • Single balloon enteroscopy
  • Small bowel biopsy
  • Polypectomy
  • Paracentesis
  • Variceal management
  • Urease breath-testing for H pylori infection 
  • Video capsule endoscopy

Newborn Intensive Care Consultation
Limited consultative services and follow up are provided at the NICUs at the 
University of Colorado Hospital and Saint Joseph Hospital.

Pediatric Specialty GI Clinic - Greeley
This clinic is held at the Medical Center East Building (2010 16th St, Ste D, Greeley, Colorado 80631–across from Northern Colorado Medical Center) on the third Thursday of each month. Initial consultative services in pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology and follow-up care are available. This clinic is staffed by Dr. David Brumbaugh.

Pediatric Specialty GI Clinic - Colorado Springs
This clinic is located at the Memorial Hospital subspecialty clinic. Initial consultations and follow up of pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology patients are available. Limited diagnostic procedures (upper endoscopy, colonscopy, pH probes) are available. Inpatients are seen in consultation at Memorial Hospital. This clinic is staffed by Dr. Amethyst Kurbegov, Dr. Christine Waasdorp-Hurtado, and Christy Jones, PA-C.

Off-Campus Services -- Outside Colorado​

Billings, Montana

Regional outreach services are provided every two months in Billings, Montana at the Eastern Region Pediatric Subspecialty Clinic. Initial consultative services and follow-up care in pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology are available. Limited diagnostic procedures (upper endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, rectal biopsy) are available. This clinic is staffed by Dr. Michael Narkewicz from Children's Colorado in Aurora.

Pediatric GI TeleClinic, Montana
Regional telemedicine clinic for follow-up care and education is provided as needed in Montana, coordinated by the Billings clinic staff (406) 237-4280. This service is staffed by Dr. Michael Narkewicz.
