Department of Pediatrics Diversity Mission Statement
The University of Colorado School of Medicine believes that diversity is a value that is central to its educational, research, service, and health care missions.
We are committed to creating a diverse environment for students,
residents,
fellows, and
faculty. We believe that an environment of inclusiveness and respect promotes excellence, and that a setting where diversity is valued leads to the training of physicians who are prepared to practice culturally effective medicine and meet the needs of the various populations we serve.
Through understanding, respecting, and embracing the unique cultural customs and beliefs of our peers, we can begin to do the same for our patients and create an environment that is supportive for all.
Diversity is an integral part of providing quality patient care, and we strive to have our department better reflect the demographics of the community we serve.

Message from the Chairman of Pediatrics
Diversity is a core value for the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and
Children’s Hospital Colorado. Since
coming to Colorado, I have been personally committed to improving our diversity
at every level, including our residents, fellows, and faculty.
Through increasing diversity and adding those
underrepresented in medicine to our ranks, we add to excellence across all of
our missions, including clinical, research, education, and advocacy.
We have made great strides, but there is still much to be accomplished. We must
celebrate the wide range of individuals who make up our team and make sure that
everyone is supported in a way to maximize success.

What is Diversity?
Diversity can be defined in many different ways, none of which are inaccurate. Our commitment to enhancing diversity is a commitment to recognizing and appreciating the variety of characteristics** and life experiences that make individuals unique, and creating an atmosphere that promotes and supports the same.
**A broad spectrum of demographic and philosophical characteristics which include, but are not limited to, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, and ability.
