Externship Stipend

Commitment to the Medically Underserved Externship Stipend

The Diversity in Pediatrics Committee (DIPC) offers a stipend, generously funded by the Department of Pediatrics, with support from other University of Colorado Departments, for fourth-year medical students from all backgrounds interested in providing health care to medically underserved communities.

The stipend is designed to help offset the travel and housing costs associated with doing a visiting student rotation.

Stipend Purpose

The University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Children’s Hospital Colorado believe that diversity is a value central to its educational, research, service, and health care missions.

The Pediatric Residency's Diversity in Pediatrics Committee’s mission includes working to increase diversity within the residency program to both better reflect the community we serve, as well as to increase cultural competency in the health care workforce.

As part of this mission, the Commitment to the Medically Underserved Extern Scholarship was designed to help offset the cost of a visiting student rotation for fourth-year medical students interested in caring for medically underserved pediatric populations in Colorado. ​


Stipend Eligibility

Any medical student attending a United States medical school (allopathic or osteopathic), other than the University of Colorado School of Medicine, who will be a fourth-year student at the time of their externship at Children's Hospital Colorado, is eligible to apply for this stipend.

Applicants shall meet the following criteria:  
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving the medically underserved community
  • Successful completion of Core Pediatrics rotation at home medical school
  • Successful completion of USMLE Part 1

 


Stipend Award Details

Up to six stipends of $1,000 each will be awarded to students who meet the above criteria and have demonstrated a commitment to caring for the medically underserved community. The stipend funds will be distributed to award recipients at the start of their externship rotation at Children's Hospital Colorado.

As part of their externship, stipend recipients will be assigned to a weekly ½-day clinic at a location which serves the medically underserved population of metro Denver. In addition, the recipient will be assigned a resident mentor for the duration of their externship rotation.

Complete stipend applications must be received no later than two months prior to the externship start date.

NOTE: The stipend application process is completely independent from the externship application process. Semi-finalist status for the stipend does not guarantee the student will be accepted for the externship. Students must be accepted to do an externship at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in order to have their stipend award status finalized.
