He completed a Residency in Psychiatry in 1989 at UCSOM, as well as an NIMH-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with the Developmental Psychobiology Research Group, Department of Psychiatry at UCSOM, in 1992. He completed an additional Residency in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Children's National Medical Center, Washington, DC, in 1994.

Dr. Clyman joined the faculty of the Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado in 1998. Until July 2009, he served as Executive Director of the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect, Co-Section Head for the Section on Family and Child Health, and he also held the Jack and Viki Thompson Chair in Child Maltreatment and Family Health.

Dr. Clyman’s research interests focus on developmental risk, clinical interventions and early intervention, and empirical policy research with infants, youth, and adolescents in abused and neglected children and their families. He is currently directing a longitudinal study of 275 young infants who have entered foster or kinship care and their families, examining the impact of child welfare policy, neighborhood, family and child factors on the development of the children’s functioning, and the early onset of psychopathology. His policy research focuses on the impact of major U.S. and state child welfare policies, such as reunification and kinship care, on the well-being of youth.

Dr. Clyman has received many awards and honors throughout his career. He has been active in a variety of national committees, review groups, and study sections. In 2005 he participated in the Surgeon General's Workshop on Child Maltreatment. Since 2001 he has been highly involved with the Task Force on Foster Care and Mental Health for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/Child Welfare League of America; currently he serves as Research Director for the Task Force as well as an Organizing Committee Member.

A respected reviewer of professional medical journals, Dr. Clyman also served as an Associate Editor for the Infant Mental Health Journal. He is an accomplished author of both journal articles and book chapters, as well as a popular speaker nationwide.
