Steven H. Abman, MD, earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, in 1979. He completed his Pediatric Residency at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1982 and was honored with the Bruce M. Garber Memorial Award for “Outstanding Resident” by the Department of Pediatrics. After serving as Chief Resident in Pediatrics, Dr. Abman completed his Fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics and The Children's Hospital and joined our faculty in 1986. He was appointed full Professor of Pediatrics with tenure in 1996, and he currently serves as the Director of the Pediatric Heart Lung Center. He established the clinical Pulmonary Hypertension Program and Ventilator Care Program at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Dr. Abman is an internationally renowned investigator in a number of areas of pediatric pulmonology. He has made important contributions to vascular biology and growth and development of the lung through his basic investigations. In addition, he has led important clinical research studies in pediatric pulmonary hypertension, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and other disorders. Dr. Abman’s pioneering work in the use of nitric oxide to treat infants and children with pulmonary hypertension resulted in his receiving the prestigious Excellence in Pediatric Research Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Abman’s research is supported by the NIH and other agencies.

Dr. Abman is the recipient of many awards. He serves as Associate Editor for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and was selected for the Editorial Boards of numerous other medical journals. He has served as a standing member of the NIH Heart Lung Blood Institute study sections and is an active reviewer for research grants. Dr. Abman has published more than 300 manuscripts in medical journals and books. He is a popular invited speaker and guest professor both nationally and internationally. He is active in training and mentoring numerous students, residents, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scientists and faculty through his work in the Pediatric Heart Lung Center.
