Dr. Samuel Dominguez and Dr. Kevin Messacar were awarded the first Astute Clinician Award at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
The doctors helped identify the group of children with neurological symptoms that initially were thought to be associated with enterovirus D-68. Subsequently, more cases were identified in other states.
“For surveillance to work, we need not just clinicians who recognize unusual cases and clusters, but clinicians who understand the importance of public health reporting," said Executive Director Dr. Larry Wolk. "Sam and Kevin and Children’s Hospital ‘get’ this.”
