Searching the Literature

The Children’s Hospital Colorado Medical Library and University of Colorado Health Sciences Library in conjunction with the Department of Pediatrics is pleased to offer this brand new computer-based training course.  This two hour EBM workshop has been developed to assist any trainee who is in the early stages of developing a biomedical research project.  This course is a great prerequisite for additional evidence-based medicine training courses, such as the Department of Pediatrics course, Biostatistics for Clinicians.

What will I learn in this course?

Trainees will learn to navigate a variety of online medical search engines, formulate a searchable question, structure a computerized database search, along with learning the pros and cons of different information sources.   At the end of this course trainees should be able to:

  • Recognize options for limiting literature search retrieval to valid and reliable research studies appropriate for clinical decision making
  • Search The Cochrane Library, Dynamed, FIRSTConsult, ACP Journal Club, and other clinical information support resources
  • Limit an Ovid or EMBASE search to evidence based limits
  • Search PubMed MEDLINE using "Clinical Queries" and learn to how set up NCBI filters for EBHC
  • Recognize how using EndNote can benefit writing and publishing

Trainees will also have an opportunity to demonstrate their search skills for two clinical scenarios.  Competence will be gaged by how many relevant articles are found, the content and terms used, the methodological terms used, the databases searched and demonstrating skills in the use of Endnote.
