Milestone and EPA Assessment for the Core Sub-specialties

This webpage has been created as a central repository of milestone assessment information for faculty, coordinators and fellows in the Department of Pediatrics.  In June of 2015, our core fellowship programs (listed below) started reporting on a set of 21 sub-competencies and milestones.

  • Adolescent Medicine
  • Cardiology
  • Child Abuse and Neglect
  • Critical Care
  • Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Neonatology
  • Pulmonary

What are Milestones?

Simply defined, a milestone is a significant point in development. For accreditation purposes, the Milestones are competency-based developmental outcomes (e.g., knowledge, skills, attitudes, and performance) that can be demonstrated progressively by residents and fellows from the beginning of their education through graduation to the unsupervised practice of their specialties. What is the Clinical Competency Committee?

Each sub-specialty has developed a Clinical Competency Committee (CCC), which is comprised of faculty within the sub-specialty who play a significant role in the education of their fellow(s).  With the assistance of the program coordinator, the CCC will gather feedback about each fellow and then report on a set of 21 sub-competencies.

Tools for the Coordinator and the CCC

  • Here is a great set of slides provided by the APPD for coordinators as they assist their program director with the task of gathering feedback for the CCC:  APPD CCC Preparation Tool for Coordinators
  • Here are instructions to help you to navigate the milestone maintenance system here at UC Denver:

  • Here is a sample of the ACGME Milestone Reporting Tool in WebAds for General Pediatrics.  Caveat: the WebAds reporting tool for the sub-specialties will have the same layout, but not the same milestones.
