The Department of Medicine is a national leader in biomedical research, consistently among the top 25 departments of medicine nationwide in NIH research funding, outpacing the growth of NIH support two-to-one over the past five years.

Department of Medicine faculty are leaders in the scientific community, with a passion for innovation and discovery to improve human health and change the ways in which we deliver care. This passion is translated to research making major contributions to the advancement of biomedical knowledge.

Research Investment in the Scientific Enterprise (RISE)

RISE provides financial support for DOM faculty who obtain extramural funding at the NIH P-, U-, or R01-levels. All DOM faculty are eligible for these funds, based on the direct costs of qualifying extramural award/s.

RISE Policy determines eligibility and level of funding. Upload your NIH Notice of Grant Award (NOGA) or equivalent to receive RISE. You will need to list all MPIs and co-PIs for each eligible award. Level of RISE funding will be updated three times per year in April, August and December. To receive any adjustments based on new awards, your NOGA or equivalent must be uploaded before the first of the month. All adjustments will be effective on the first day of the following month, i.e. May 1, September 1, January 1."

SOM Bridge Funding Match

DOM will match, for one year, funds provided through the SOM bridge funding program for eligible DOM faculty. If you received SOM Bridge Funding after January 1, 2024, upload your letter from the SIRC here to be eligible.

DOM Financial Contributions and Letters of Support (LOS) for Large Grants and Core Resources

Requests for financial contributions to and/or letters of support from DOM can be obtained in one place – right here. These are for LOS and/or financial support for large extramural grants where department support is expected or enhances the chances for successful grant funding (eg. certain NIH P and U mechanisms), for centers and institutes affiliated with DOM, and for core facilities who are applying for SOM Strategic Infrastructure for Research Initiatives (SIRC) or NIH Shared Instrumentation Grants (SIG). Online requests are evaluated monthly and must be received at least three weeks before the application due date.

COLLABORATE DOM (Collaborative Opportunities for Advancing Research and Translational Efforts in the Department of Medicine) Program

The Collaborative Opportunities for Advancing Research and Translational Efforts (COLLABORATE) Program aims to support new collaborations among DOM Divisions, along with new collaborations between Department of Medicine investigators and those in other CU Anschutz Departments/Schools to advance research and discovery efforts by promoting collaboration between basic, translational, and clinical researchers. 

 

These awards are designed to facilitate the development of new teams to perform interdisciplinary research in any field through two phases: 1) team formation, and 2) pilot award phases. For the team formation phase, $3,000 will be awarded for a period of 6 months to develop a proposal describing the team members, their role in the project, and provide specific aims and a description of the needed preliminary data and timeline to submit a multi-principal investigator (MPI) NIH R01 grant, SOM ASPIRE application, or equivalent.

The follow-on, pilot award phase will provide $40,000 over 12 months to develop the preliminary data in support of the MPI application. Up to three pilot awards will be funded per year.  Pilot awardees will be expected to: 1) submit a co-authored manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal within 12 months of pilot award initiation (can be a review paper), and 2) submit a MPI R01 or equivalent within 18 months of pilot award initiation or SOM ASPIRE application within 12 months of pilot award initiation.

Online applications for both the team formation and inaugural pilot awards are due May 1, 2024.

Research Professional Awards

The department recognizes the critical role that our research professionals play in the success of our research endeavors. We are pleased to recognize some of our best and brightest colleagues at the department’s annual awards ceremony.

Grant Writing Workshops

The Department of Medicine Research Office holds several grant writing workshops and seminars for faculty developing grant proposals for external funding. These include a specific aims workshop, an intensive, multi-week workshop series for faculty actively developing NIH R01 or equivalent proposals, and several seminars that are open to all (faculty and trainees) and include grantsmanship and proposal development topics of general interest. Individual consultations are also available.

Division Administrator Training

We hold bi-monthly programmatic research meeting series for division administrators and other divisional staff to stay up to date with campus processes, policy changes, federal sponsor changes, and to grow best practices including basic training on financial management, help with pre- and post-award matters, and campus resources and templates. Professional Development for CU Research Professionals (formerly PRAs)

The Clinical Research Workforce Development initiative through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research supports the connectivity, training and career development of clinical research professionals at CU Anschutz.

A similar initiative is about to be launched for laboratory research professionals and we will post those details as they become available.
