Exercise for Healthy Aging

Purpose of this Study:
The goal of this study is to determine the best “dose” of exercise in people aging with HIV, and determine whether or not the dose differs from people without HIV.

Exercise sessions (cardiovascular + strength training) are 3x/week at the Anschutz Exercise Research Facility (Leprino Building) for 6 months.

Study Qualifications:

  • Men and women aged 50-70
    • without HIV infection (men only),
    • with HIV infection on antiretroviral therapy for a minimum of 2 years with no detectable viral load, CD4 count >200
  • no major health problems that would interfere with the ability to exercise
  • if diabetic, must be well-controlled on oral medications (no insulin)
  • body mass index between 20 and 40
  • no current/chronic infections (including Hepatitis B or C)

What happens if I join the study? You will receive:

  • A heart stress test to make sure exercise is safe for you
  • Two body scans & blood work
  • Free, supervised exercise sessions 3 times/week at the University of Colorado Exercise Research Facility
  • Optional muscle biopsy
  • Pedometer
  • Compensation for your time
