Practice Based Research

The Department of Family Medicine has a long-standing history, and remains actively involved in engaging networks of primary care clinicians that come together to share clinical information and experiences to improve the health of patients through Practice Based Research and Practice Based Research Networks.

In recent years, our work has evolved to include the use of electronic health data to support our network of clinicians and the team of investigators that use these data to conduct large-scale health services research projects to inform policy.

Health Services Research 

The Department of Family Medicine is engaged in health services research through a shared infrastructure, faculty and staff with the Colorado Health Outcomes Program, which aims to identify the most effective ways to organize, manage, finance, and deliver high quality care; reduce medical errors; and improve patient safety.

Systems Redesign and Quality Improvement 

This period of major transformation of the health care system and primary care practice in particular has offered the Department of Family Medicine timely opportunities and a tremendous amount of work in the areas of systems redesign and quality improvement necessary to inform this transformation.

Comparative Effectiveness Research

Using our expertise in systems redesign, engagement of primary care practices, medical informatics, populational health, and quality improvement, we've made initial steps to marry the interests of health care providers to improve patient care, with the growing demand for access to large amounts of clinically-relevant data for comparative effectiveness and related research.

Community Based Participatory Research

Through our work with 2040 Partners for Health and the Partnership of Academicians and Communities for Translation (PACT), among others, the Department of Family Medicine carries out community-based participatory research. We hope to educate and bring together, improve relationship and build trust between investigators and communities, and to make funds available for continued community engagement and research.
