University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency

Family Medicine Innovations

The University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency and the University of Colorado School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine have developed a reputation for innovation in Family Medicine practice and education. The residency program participated in the American Academy of Medical College’s Chronic Care Collaborative and was one of the 14 “Preparing the Personal Physician for Practice” (P4) demonstration sites.

We have redesigned our curriculum to create time to teach residents the concepts and skills associated with redesigning Family Medicine practices as Patient Centered Medical Homes (PCMH).  We are active in the Colorado PCMH Collaborative project, which has the goal of having all the Family Medicine residency practices in Colorado become PCMH practices. Both of our practices are certified by the National Center for Quality Assurance as Patient Centered Medical Homes.
The Department of Family Medicine has long been successful in a variety of Family Medicine initiatives including facilitating practice change, rejoining medical and mental health services in a PCMH and conducting both practice-based research and Community-Based Collaborative Research.
The AF Williams Family Medicine Center is involved with the efforts of the new planned community being built on Denver’s old Stapleton Airport to become the healthiest community in the country.  A long term research project following the progress of this effort is being conducted by the Department of Family Medicine. Stapleton 2040 is actively participating with the community in defining how to become this healthy community.
The department is actively involved in three practice-based research networks that are addressing very fundamental questions about what improves patients’ care and health outcomes in family practices across the state of Colorado.
Consider joining our residency that is committed to providing the type of health care training that will prepare you to take on the challenges of practice in the twenty-first century.
