Dr. Voorhees is an Associate Professor and the Vice-Chair for Education of the Department of Family Medicine of the University Of Colorado Denver School Of Medicine.  Prior to this role, Dr. Voorhees assumed the role of Director of Graduate Medical Education for the Department of Family Medicine in 2006.  He split his time in this role while also serving as the Director of Graduate Medical Education for The Colorado Health Foundation.  He left The Colorado Health Foundation July, 2008 to assume the role of Vice-Chair full time at the University.

Dr. Voorhees’ special area of interest in addition to medical education is general internal medicine with an emphasis on preventive medicine as well as computers in medicine. He is also interested in healthcare policy, and recently published the results of a study on Underinsurance.  He has testified before the Colorado state legislature on a number of occasions
Dr. Voorhees enjoys spending time with his wife Kelly, his daughters and step-son, as well as skiing, photography, computers, reading, exercise and watching most sports.

Dr. Voorhees was named the 2010 Colorado Family Physician of the Year by the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians. 


Dr. Voorhees was the principal investigator on a study conducted through the Practice Based Research Network – SNOCAP on Underinsurance. He is interested in health policy and health care reform.  He is on the Colorado Medical Society Congress for Health Care Reform and chairs the Colorado Medical Society/Specialty Society Medicaid Reform Task Force.


Dr. Voorhees helped to found the Swedish Family Medicine Residency, which was started using his private practice with the first residents in 1994, after practicing in private practice since 1983.  Prior to becoming the GME director, he was the SFMR Program Director for 5 years, and was Medical Director prior to that. He completed the National Institute of Program Director Development Fellowship in 2003.  He received the AAFP Degree of Fellow in 2003. He completed the Regional Institute of Health and Environmental Leadership Fellowship in 2006.  Dr Voorhees is a past-president and past-board chair of the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians.  Dr Voorhees serves on the Colorado Medical Society Congress for Healthcare Reform, and serves as a delegate for the ADEMS Medical Society to the Colorado Medical Society annual meeting.  He is an alternate delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians Congress of Delegates.  He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians Commission on Education, the Subcommittee for International Family Medicine, the Subcommittee on Generation of New Knowledge, the Subcommittee on Assembly Scientific Program, and is the 2010 Denver Local Advisor for the 2010 AAFP Annual Scientific Assembly.  He chairs a task force with the Colorado Medical Society to reform Medicaid for the State of Colorado.  He was selected as one of The Best Doctors in America 2005-2009. He serves on a number of boards which promote healthcare in Colorado.  He currently sees patients 3 – 4 half days per week at the University Family Medicine at Park Meadows.
