I always wanted to be a physician, probably since about sixth grade when someone told me that women could be doctors too. I always thought I would be a family physician – I wanted to take care of everyone and everything! Many, many years later I still love everything about being a family physician and see my role in life to develop new family physicians and places for patients to see family physicians. I spent the first stage of my career in educational roles, helping start new residency programs, serving as residency director of several programs and developing expertise in both education and the management of residency programs. My second career phase is growing ambulatory clinical practices and leading them to be patient-centered medical homes where everyone can find a family physician to integrate their medical care in any setting. I’ve become passionate about safety and quality and how we provide the very best care possible for our patients.

I serve as the Senior Vice-Chair of Quality and Clinical Affairs for the Department of Family Medicine, with responsibility for all of the clinical activities of Family Medicine and oversight of our finances. In this capacity, I also work closely with the University of Colorado Hospital (Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety Committee, Clinical Informatics Committee, Practice Operations Management Committee) and University Physicians Inc (Second Vice-President, Member of the Board of Directors, Associate Medical Director). In the past I served as the President of the Faculty Senate and have worked with both undergraduate and graduate medical education.

On a national level, I am a member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, Residency Review Committee for Family Medicine. I sit on the National Committee on Quality Assurance’s Committee on Physician Programs and the American Academy of Family Physicians Commission on Quality and Practice. I am also a faculty member of the National Institute of Program Director Development, a fellowship program for Family Medicine residency directors.
