Research Interests:
Our research efforts are focused on glioblastoma (GBM), the most malignant primary brain tumor and one of the deadliest cancers known to modern medicine. In our ongoing study of the suppression of anti-tumor immune responses in affected patients, we recently identified a new source of immunosuppression in GBM patients that is associated with increased numbers of circulating activated neutrophils. A major focus of the lab is developing further insight into the role that activated neutrophils play in the biology of GBM and the benefits that may be derived by targeting this population.
A second area of interest involves tumor cell invasion in GBM, which is a critical source of treatment failure in affected patients. We have developed a model whereby patient tumor samples are kept alive in culture for several weeks, allowing us to evaluate the behavior of tumor cells within the “ex vivo” microenvironment.  Labeling of tumor cells and time-lapse laser confocal microscopy are used to “track” tumor cells as they migrate over time, which permits comparative analysis of factors associated with invasive characteristics as well as “personalized” therapeutic targeting of tumor cell movement on a patient-specific basis.
