Title of Study Principal Investigator Description

Evalina Burger, MD The primary hypothesis is cell saver transfusion in spine surgery is associated with coagulation abnormalities or other changes in the body.

Melatonin/Calmodulin Signaling- AIS

Evalina Burger, MD
Melatonin/Calmodulin Signaling- AIS

Medicrea Adult Deformity Study Evalina Burger, MD
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the correlation between the restoration of the sagittal balance and the improvement of the quality of life for patients with adult scoliosis, treated with a polyaxial system (PASS® LP system) during the 2 years after a spinal fusion surgery.

Christopher Cain, MD The objective of this retrospective study is to evaluate the positioning of disk replacement devices in total disc replacement (TDR) procedures. Using a finite element model (FEM), actual positioning of disk replacement devices will be compared to ideal placement as determined by FEM.  The correlation between actual and ideal placement will then be related to the clinical outcomes to assess the importance of precise device positioning in the TDR procedures.

Michael Finn In the present study, we plan to build on the initial description of the prevalence of medical marijuana use in a university spine center that we have researched previously through the use of a survey.

Marijuana and Spine Pain Michael Finn An increasing number of patients presenting for spinal surgery evaluation at the University of Colorado Spine center have been noted to be using marijuana for the treatment of their condition by the investigators. The purpose of this study is to examine medical marijuana usage rates in patients presenting for surgical evaluation in a tertiary spinal surgery clinic. Secondary aims are to investigate potential relationships between marijuana use and clincal status on 2 standard questionnaires.

Evaluate the Efficacy, Safety, and Pharmacokinetics of SUN13837 Injection in Adult Subjects with Acute Spinal Cord Injury

Susan Ladley-O'Brien A Multicenter, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Parallel-Group Study to Evaluate the Efficacy, Safety, and Pharmacokinetics of SUN13837 Injection in Adult Subjects with Acute Spinal Cord Injury
Denver SI Joint Questionnaire (DSIJQ) Validation Study Emily Lindley, PhD The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) is one of the most commonly used and reported clinical outcome measures.  Although the ODI has been validated for patients with chronic LBP, it has not been validated in SI joint pain.

HCOL Emily Lindley, PhD The overall purpose of this study is to create a prospective database that will allow us to (1) track outcomes following various spine surgery procedures and (2) identify potential demographic and psychosocial predictors of outcomes.  We will administer several demographic, functional, and psychosocial questionnaires to patients before their scheduled spine surgery and at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months postoperative.

Pain Preception Study Vikas Patel, MD
The present research proposal will build upon these findings and overcome their limitations by developing and evaluating a computer controlled pressure instrument. This novel instrument will be designed to measure pressure output with greater sensitivity and produce stimuli with higher inter-stimulus reliability than currently available hand-held pressure instruments. Furthermore, the instrument will simultaneously record changes in heart rate, skin impedance, and blood pressure during the pain testing, as these autonomic responses have recently been linked to pain sensitivity. The instrument will be used in the present study to test pain thresholds and tolerance in healthy individuals to establish normative data.

Prospective O-Arm Study Vikas Patel, MD
Techniques for pedicle screw placement have included the use of anatomic landmarks, laminotomy with palpation of the pedicle, plain radiography, standard fluoroscopic imaging, fluoroscopic image guidance, and computed tomography (CT) image guidance.

Vitamin D Deficiency in Rats Vikas Patel, MD The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of vitamin D deficiency on the success of spinal fusion.

Retro 3D SI Imaging Vikas Patel, MD The objective of this retrospective study is to determine the various characteristics of the sacroiliac joint, including surface area, shape, articular cartilage surface area, symphyseal surface area, and 3D cross-sectional imaging anatomy of the sacroiliac joint.

VertiFlex Superion Interspinous Spacer Vikas Patel, MD
The proposed prospective, multi-center, randomized clinical trial is designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Superion™ ISS compared to the X-STOP® IPD® device in healthy adults suffering from at least 6 months of moderate spinal stenosis symptoms who have been unresponsive to conservative care.
INSITE Vikas Patel, MD The purpose of this study is to compare outcomes when patients with degenerative sacroiliitis (arthritis of the SI joint) and or sacroiliac disruption (abnormal separation or tearing of the sacroiliac joint)undergo either SI joint fusion with the iFuse Implant System or undergo specific, targeted non-surgical treatment of the SI joint.

Aesculap Activ-L Vikas Patel, MD

The purpose of this study is to learn whether an investigational device called the Activ-L Artificial Disc is safe and effective in the treatment of degenerative disc disease of the lumbar spine.

LANX Aspen Study Vikas Patel, MD This is a multi-center, prospective randomized clinical study to evaluate the clinical outcome of subjects with degenerative disc disease (DDD) treated with ALIF and supplemental posterior fixation using ASPEN Spinous Process System compared to pedicle screw instrumentation.
