AURORA, Colorado – July 16, 2013 -
U.S. News and World Report again ranks the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) as the best hospital in Colorado. The U.S. News Best Hospitals report also ranks five specialties at UCH among the best in the United States and nine other specialties as “high performing.”
On July 16, U.S. News scored UCH’s cancer, kidney disorders, neurology & neurosurgery, orthopedics and pulmonology programs among the top 50 in the United States. (See rankings, below.) These rankings also reflect the clinical and research expertise of physicians at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
“Every day our physicians, nurses and staff come to work with the goal of providing the highest quality and safest care,” said UCH CEO John Harney. “Our mission is to improve the lives of our patients in both big and small ways, and this ranking is a great recognition of that constant work to be the best.”
UCH is the academic medical center of University of Colorado Health (UCHealth), a nonprofit health care system that includes five hospitals and dozens of clinics throughout Colorado. Two other UCHealth hospitals were also ranked very high. U.S. News recognized Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins as #4 in the state and Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland as #7 in Colorado.
“University of Colorado Health is unique in that we offer every specialty and every service a patient might need, from primary care and community services to advanced clinical trials and surgeries available nowhere else,” said UCHealth CEO Bruce Schroffel. “As the U.S. News ranking shows, all our locations focus on quality and on bringing health – not just health care – to our patients.”
UCH is nationally ranked by U.S. News in five specialties:
• Pulmonology (2nd)
• Cancer (23rd)
• Orthopaedics (28th)
• Kidney disorders (32nd)
• Neurology & Neurosurgery (46th)
Several UCH specialties made significant jumps on the national rankings including orthopedics, kidney disorders and cancer. The University of Colorado Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Rocky Mountain region, and one of only 44 in the country. Earlier this year, moreover, the University of Colorado Cancer Center was named a member of the elite National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
UCH has been ranked by U.S. News for 19 consecutive years and is among only a handful of hospitals in the nation to rank nationally in multiple specialties. Best Hospitals was created more than 20 years ago to identify hospitals exceptionally skilled in handling the most difficult cases, and the rankings are driven mostly by objective data including survival rates and patient safety.
