The mission of the Petrash laboratory is to discover the causes of vision disease using biochemical and genetic tools. The lab’s research focuses on the mechanisms of cataract and diabetic eye disease, two of the most common causes of blindness. In our studies of diabetes, we are developing new drugs to be used against diabetic retinopathy and cataracts. We are measuring the effect of new drug formulations on markers of disease, including biochemical changes in target tissues that may reflect disease mechanism. Major pathways of interest include oxidative stress and immunity. In our studies of cataract mechanisms, we are investigating a new class of protein-based biotherapeutic compounds. Basic laboratory studies will focus on testing new tissue culture- and animal models with new biotherapeutic candidates.
