Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute (RMLEI): RMLEI is the center of operations for the University of Colorado Department of Ophthalmology and is located adjacent to the University of Colorado Hospital as part of the Anschutz Medical Campus, which is home to the University of Colorado School of Medicine and all its associated clinics and research facilities. The University of Colorado Health Eye Institute was established in 2001 and currently has over 50,000 patient visits per year as the main site of practice for many of the full-time ophthalmology faculty members. As a regional referral center the variety and volume of pathology encountered is immense. The residents spend 6 months working at this facility in each of the first 2 years of residency and then 3 months in their final year.
Denver Health Medical Center (DHMC): Denver Health is the County Hospital for the city of Denver and is a nationally-recognized model for the delivery of health care. It is a level 1 regional trauma center in addition to being Denver’s “safety net” hospital for the uninsured. The Eye Clinic has 18 exam lanes and is staffed by 3 full-time faculty members and a large cohort of volunteer faculty from the Denver community. The residents spend 3 months each year at Denver Health.
Denver Veteran’s Administration Hospital (VA): Once new construction is completed, the Denver VA Hospital will be moving to the Anschutz medical campus from its current location about 5 miles away. The Denver VA is the regional referral center for all of Colorado and large areas of Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas. This provides a large volume of patients with a variety of pathologies. The surgical volume for the residents at this facility is consistently very high as a result. Residents spend 3 months at the VA in their first year and 6 months in their third year.
Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHC): Children’s Hospital Colorado is located on the Anschutz Medical campus, just across the street from the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute. The hospital opened in 2008 and is consistently recognized as one of the top pediatric health care facilities in the country. It is a large regional referral center that provides a very rich clinical and surgical experience for the resident, who rotates there for 3 months during the second year of residency.
