Required Courses for Phase 1 Students -- Fall Semester

IDPT 5015 Basic Cardiac Life Support

Course will be taught along American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines utilizing lecture, video, demonstrations on mannequins and a practice session.  Students will read the required text prior to course, pass a written examination, and demonstrate performance skills essential to BCLS.

Electives for Phase 1 and Phase 2 Students

EMED 6624 Introduction to Wilderness Medicine

Course consists of a lecture series and one four hour weekend outdoor exercise with an emphasis on basic science topics with pathophysiology of wilderness medicine problems. Students participate in skill stations and perform various field medicine and evacuation procedures.

Course Restrictions: Must attend field day with Rocky Mountain Rescue in Boulder.

EMED 6625 Introduction to Global Health

This course, required for Global Health Track students, gives a broad overview of important issues in global health, e.g., the HIV epidemic, maternal-child health, humanitarian assistance, clean water and sanitation. Pass/fail based on attendance and final project (1-pager).

Course Restrictions: Global Health Students only (1st years).

EMED 6626 Pre-Hospital Medicine

Students required to participate in one 10-hour ride along shift with Denver Paramedic Division 911 ambulances, attend required Introductory Lecture on prehospital medicine, and submit one evaluation from ambulance ride.

Course Restrictions: Enrollment restricted to EMIG (Emergency Medicine Interest Group) only.

EMED 6627 Introduction to Emergency Medicine & Trauma

Introduction to life-threatening conditions fundamental to emergency medicine. Focuses on the essentials of stabilization, rapid diagnosis, and acute management. Weekly lectures given by faculty from University of Colorado and Denver Health. Pass-fail based on attendance with an optional write-up for honors.

EMED 6628 Flight Medicine

Students will learn about the unique environment of critical care transport medicine and will experience a 12-hour shift with Flight for Life aboard their helicopters, airplanes, and ambulances while providing care across the region.

Pre-requisite: EMED 6626 Pre-Hospital Medicine.

IDPT 7031 Emergency Care

An introduction to the initial evaluation and management of emergently presenting problems in adults and children. Emphasis on recognition, differential diagnosis, and stabilization of shock and trauma. Students will also be exposed to pre-hospital care and concepts of triage.

IDPT 8013 Tropical Medicine

Interactive discussions, case presentations, lab sessions, and lectures from experienced global health providers.  Topics cover healthcare in resource-poor settings, tropical diseases, and basics of community health and international public health.  Evaluation based on class particiaption / final examination.

Restrictions: Offered section 25 only.

IDPT 8014 Global Health US Project

This course is the continuation of IDPT 6667 and 6668.  Students will undertake a global health project at a US-based site under the supervision of their designated mentor and local supervisors.

EMED 8004 Emergency Medicine at University of Colorado Hospital

Students are primary caregivers in a level II trauma center with a variety of patients and individual teaching time with attendings and senior residents.

EMED 8005 Emergency Medicine at Denver Health Medical Center

Student is primary caregiver for acutely ill/injured patients at DHMC Emergency Department, supervised by Emergency Medicine Staff. Daily lectures in traumatic/medical emergencies, conferences, “board rounds”. Orientation, first day, 7:15 am., Admin Conf. room. 

Restrictions: Available Spring Semester only (January-April).

EMED 8006 Emergency Medicine Career Elective

Student is primary caregiver for acutely ill/injured patients at DHMC Emergency Department, supervised by Emergency Medicine Staff. Daily lectures in traumatic/medical emergencies, conferences, “board rounds”. Orientation, first day, 7:15 am., Admin Conf. room. 

Restrictions: Emergency Medicine Career track students only.  Sections 001-029 only (May-December).

EMED 8024 Clinical Toxicology

Introduction to medical toxicology at the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center.  Participation in clinical service, inpatient consultative care at DHMC/UCH.  Conferences and didactic instruction provided weekly.  Short presentations required.  Exposure to fundamentals of environmental toxicology, public health concerns, and occuptional toxicology.

EMED 8031 Wilderness Medicine

Students will attend lectures on wilderness medicine topics and then practice those scenarios in a wilderness setting.  The course will spend the first week near Estes Park, CO and the second week near Moab, UT.

Restrictions: Must be 4th year student in good academic standing.  Not available to externs.  Variable fee.  Course offered sections 47 and 48 only.
