Approximately 1100 patients at high-risk for developing lung cancer are surveyed on a yearly basis and asked to submit a sputum sample in an attempt to identify lung cancer markers in sputum.

Smoking Harm Reduction

Dr. Russ Glasgow

NCI/2003-06

Approximately 300 patients were called (150 control and 150 intervention), where 150 intervention participants were delivered four motivational interviews to assess barriers and encourage smoking reduction. Tailored newsletters and physiological assessments were also a part of the intervention.

Prostate Cancer Screening

20 minute interviews about prostate cancer screening knowledge and behaviors were delivered to randomly-sampled males. A sample size of over 8,500 yielded 2,600 completed interviews.

Family Health Promotion Project

CARES

40-minute pre- and post- telephone interviews are delivered to newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients who are currently using the services of a patient navigator to assess cancer treatment and symptom management. A goal of 20 participants is desired.

EASE

Disability after Traumatic Brain Injury in Colorado: A population-based study

Attempted a total sample size of 37,250 randomly selected Colorado telephone numbers and conducted approximately 2,700, 5 minute interviews with Colorado residents who have a history of traumatic injury. A subset of 200 was then re-interviewed to assess the reliability of the survey instrument.

Actively conducting baseline and follow-up interviews with breast cancer and prostate cancer patients to assess the effectiveness of information based programs during different stages of cancer treatment decision making. Leaf Study - Lifestyles, Events and Follow-up Study
