Specialty:

Lab Sciences

Location:

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Division of Medical Oncology, Aurora

Prerequisites:

Not indicated

Number of Openings:  2

Program Objective:

To understand the role of the tumor microenvironment on determining whether a cancer cell will remain dormant or metastasize.

Program Description:

Depending on the interest and previous experience of the student, one of the following projects could be undertaken:

  1. Characterize expression of tissue remodeling genes involved in mammary gland development during puberty and determine the role of diet in their expression using RT-PCR and RNase protection assay (molecular biology),
  2. Biochemical characterization of the mammary gland extracellular matrix with normal, at-risk, and low-risk of developing breast cancer using HPLC (protein chemistry),
  3. Evaluate tumor-associated stromal reaction using immunohistochemical approaches and cell culture (cell biology).
