Keynote Speaker: Alice Waters Alice Waters, restaurateur, author, activist, and proprietor of Chez Panisse Restaurant and Café in Berkeley, California, is a pioneer of a culinary philosophy based on using only the freshest organic products, served only in season.
In 1996, Alice created The Edible Schoolyard, a one-acre garden and kitchen classroom at Berkeley’s Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle School. By actively involving a thousand students in all aspects of the food cycle, The Edible Schoolyard is a model public education program that instills the knowledge and values students need to build a humane and sustainable future. Alice established the Chez Panisse Foundation to support the Schoolyard and encourage similar programs to teach, nurture, and empower young people.
The success of The Edible Schoolyard led to the School Lunch Initiative, whose national agenda integrates a nutritious daily lunch and gardening experience into the academic curriculum of all public schools in the United States.
In 2005, the Edible Schoolyard launched an affiliate program in New Orleans, Louisiana. Today, there is a network of seven founding Edible Schoolyards that span the country, from California to Brooklyn, New York. In August 2011, the Chez Panisse Foundation was re-named the Edible Schoolyard Project. The focus of its new work will be an online resource, edibleschoolyard.org, that will identify and map like-minded edible education programs around the world, and gather and distribute their best practices.
Alice is Vice President of Slow Food International, a nonprofit organization that promotes and celebrates local artisanal food traditions and has more than 100,000 members in over 130 countries. She is the author of ten books, including The Art of Simple Food and her most recent book, 40 Years of Chez Panisse: The Power Of Gathering.
The Center for Women’s Health Research shares the belief, supported by Alice Waters, that healthy living at any age leads to healthy communities.
