The Center for Women's Health Research is taking the lead in focusing vital research on Diabetes, which comprises an important part of the Center's initial research agenda. Diabetes is the 5th deadliest disease in the U.S., and has no cure.

About 9.3 million of all women in the United States over the age of 20 have diabetes, and one-third of them do not know it.

The most common complication from diabetes is CVD, which is more serious among women than men.

Women with diabetes are 7.6 times more likely to suffer from Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) than women without diabetes. (PVD is a disorder resulting in reduced flow of blood and oxygen to tissues in the legs and feet).

The prevalence of diabetes is 2-to-4 times higher among African American, Hispanic/Latina, American Indian, and Asian/Pacific Islander women than among white women.
