Clinical research typically studies drug, biologic or device in human subjects with the intent to discover potential beneficial effects and/or determine its safety and efficacy.

Translational research is that continuum of research that ensures a free flow of information and new treatments from the laboratory to the patient bedside and back again.

Health services research typically studies the organization, delivery, and financing of health care.
