"What motivates me to pursue a career in research is recognizing that changes in lifestyle, which cause obesity and sedentary behavior are leading to the emergence of diabetes as a global health care problem. Diabetes is the largest cause of kidney failure in developed countries. My mother has diabetes without any family history, which was also a motivating factor for me to better understand the mechanisms governing this phenomenon. I believe that better treatment will come after intensive and well-funded research."

What is the Research Goal?

Dr. Jiang’s research goal is to discover important new therapeutic applications for the treatment of diabetic complications.

Understanding the Research

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease not only in the USA, but in most of the world. However, few studies have examined the role of gender in the decline in kidney function associated with diabetes. Of significance, kidney disease increases complications and incidences of death resulting from cardiovascular disease by 5-10 fold. Dr. Jiang’s research will test if bile acids play an important role in the prevention of diabetic kidney disease. These studies will also investigate the gender specific effects of bile acids and will be directly relevant to creating better therapeutic treatments for women’s diabetic kidney complications.
