"I started doing cardiovascular research at Penn State University College of Medicine in Hershey, PA as a summer job while in college. The heart and blood vessels always have been an area of particular interest for me; and the enthusiasm of my first mentor and his continued guidance over the past years has kept me in academics. Working with faculty at CU Boulder while I was a cardiology fellow introduced me to the importance of the topic of gender differences in cardiovascular disease."
What is the Research Goal?
Dr. Stauffer’s research goal is to develop and tailor therapies specific to women with cardiovascular disease.
Understanding the Research
The heart and blood vessels respond differently to abnormal influences depending on gender. Dr. Stauffer’s research is focused on discovering gender differences in the way the heart grows in response to an abnormal influence that produces heart failure or abnormal heart rhythms. In addition, he is interested in determining gender differences in the way the blood vessels respond to abnormal influences that produce plaques that lead to heart attacks and strokes.
