"My particular research interest in helping patients with type 2 diabetes stemmed from coaching my father to successfully control his diabetes with healthier dietary and exercise habits. Although my patients generally recognize the importance of making lifestyle changes, they often struggle to implement them. I find that my female patients with diabetes, in particular, find it more difficult to increase their physical activity than do my male patients with diabetes; thus my interest in helping women with T2D overcome barriers to exercise."

What is the Research Goal?

Dr. Huebschmann’s research goal is to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in women with type 2 diabetes by overcoming barriers to physical activity. She plans to take this research to the community level.

Understanding the Research

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death for women with type 2 diabetes; research can potentially help to reduce this risk and save lives .. Because regular physical activity decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease in women with diabetes, Dr. Huebschmann’s research project seeks to prevent heart attacks and strokes by identifying and overcoming physical and psychological barriers to physical activity for women with diabetes.
