Welcome - About CWHR

The Center for Women's Health Research is the fulfillment of a dream by its founders to create a place where scientists and physician-scientists work on closing the gap in women's health research for the benefit of women everywhere, their families, and communities.

Their dream has been driven by this reality:

Diseases often present differently in women than men, and women's responses to diseases and their treatments can differ from men's. But we know far too little about how gender affects health, disease, and aging, because medical research frequently has excluded women.

The Center is committed to being a leader in closing the research gap in women's health.

The Center was created in June 2004 by the University of Colorado Board of Regents. It is based in the School of Medicine's Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado.

Research Priorities: Cardiovascular Disease & Diabetes

  • Cardiovascular disease (heart disease, stroke, peripheral arterial disease) is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States.

  • Diabetes is the 5th leading cause of death in the nation. It has no cure, and its consequences for the heart are more severe in women than men.

These diseases urgently need new medical research and knowledge to combat their deadly effects in women. Other research areas critical to women's health will be added as the Center grows.

Important Goal

An important goal of the Center is to consolidate research in women's health under one roof, so scientists and physician-scientists can work collaboratively and synergistically across disciplines in a more strategic cost-effective way-coordinating, utilizing, and leveraging resources to accelerate research and to speed the transfer of knowledge from the laboratory bench to the disease prevention arena and the patient's bedside.
