Embryo/Sperm Cryopreservation


Cryopreservation is the process of freezing germ plasm (oocytes and sperm) for stable, long term storage.

Cryopreservation has become an important research tool in the current laboratory setting in numerous ways:

    • Insure against loss of your colonies due to natural disasters (fire, disease, flood etc.).
    • Guard against genetic drift (the spontaneous, incremental changes in genetic makeup in long term colonies).
    • Preserve inactive transgenic lines for future use, thus saving time and effort that would have been expended maintaining inactive colonies.
    • The ease of shipping the gametes (sperm or embryos) to and from facilities worldwide.

 

It should be noted that the ideal time to consider cryopreservation is when your colony is young, healthy and breeding is optimal.

In order to accommodate more investigative labs, we have added Sperm Cryopreservation to our procedures. This, like embryo cryopreservation, carries many advantages and colony safe guards.

Please review our recommendations for setting up your colonies for optimal embryo production. We also outline some strain-related difficulties during embryo production.
