Leaders from the University of Colorado School of
Medicine on Wednesday celebrated the opening of its branch in Colorado Springs
at a ceremony in the Lane Center for Academic Health Sciences at the University
of Colorado Colorado Springs.
The branch in Colorado Springs will allow the CU School
of Medicine to expand its class size and offer new clinical-training
opportunities for third- and fourth-year medical students.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to accomplish many of
our goals – teaching students, caring for patients and building strong
relationships with communities and health care providers throughout the state,”
said School of Medicine Dean Richard Krugman, MD.
The opening of the Lane Center at the University of Colorado Colorado
Springs is the result of a $4 million gift from the John E. and Margaret L.
Lane Foundation to UCCS and Peak Vista Community Health. The School of Medicine
will occupy the fourth floor of the building at 4863 N. Nevada Ave.
Among the speakers at the event was Erik Wallace, MD, who
is associate dean of the School of Medicine’s Colorado Springs branch.
“The School of Medicine’s branch in Colorado Springs, along
with partnerships and support from UCCS, community health-care providers, and
community stakeholders will be able to provide a superior medical education
experience for our students who will then become outstanding 21st century
physician leaders improving the health for everyone in this community for many
years to come,” Wallace said.
This summer, the School of Medicine plans to matriculate
184 students pursuing medical degrees, an increase from its current class size
of 160. Beginning in 2016, the additional 24 students per class will receive
clinical training at sites in El Paso County.
