Graduate Orthodontics Program

How to Apply

The Graduate Orthodontics Program accepts 15 residents each year from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences. We use a holistic review process when considering applicants by reviewing a number of factors with an emphasis on academic achievement, service, research, class rank and an invitation only interview.


The ideal applicant would exhibit the following attributes:

  • Dental school GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • GRE scores (top quartile)
  • Class rank (top 30%)
  • Research experience is highly desirable
  • Record of service activities
  • Excellent letters of recommendation (A strong recommendation from the applicant’s department of orthodontics is preferable)

We encourage those interested to apply by using the following guidelines.

Prerequisite Requirements​

  • Graduate from an ADA accredited dental school in the United States or Canada with a DDS or DMD degree
  • Pass the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) Part I. Applicant must pass the NBDE Part II before enrollment into the program
  • Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT) - While not required, applicants can submit their​ ADAT score to supplement their application

Application Requirements
Applications are accepted from May 1 to September 15 of each year. Applicants may apply for free by submitting all required items directly to the school, or by submitting a web-based application through the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) for a $75 fee which allows applicants to send their personal essay, academic performance evaluation form and letters of recommendation electronically. The remaining items will need to be mailed to the address below.

Required items:

  • Graduate Orthodontics Program Application
  • Personal essay
  • Academic Performance Evaluation Form
  • Three letters of recommendation – at least one from former faculty and 2 from other faculty or orthodontists 
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Official GRE scores (our Institutional code is 7209)
  • Official National Board Part I and II Scores
  • Passport size photo
  • $75 application fee payable to "CU Orthodontics"

In-person interviews are by invitation only, require a full day and are held between October 1 - November 15 each year. 

Acceptance Offers
Acceptance offers will be sent no later than December 1.​
