Living Here

Education at 5,280 feet

The city is the classroom for students, professors and researchers on the Downtown Campus—access to internships and local businesses is just steps away. On-campus housing is available, and access to public transportation makes off-campus living a snap.

The location of UC Denver provides a unique blend of metropolitan buzz, set against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. Our campus is within walking distance of parks, museums, theaters and performing arts centers, and an eclectic assortment of restaurants, coffeehouses, and shops. At the same time, we are less than an hour away from some of the best skiing, snowboarding, camping, hiking, whitewater rafting, and rock-climbing in the world.

Denver Campus

The city is the classroom for students, professors and researchers on the Denver Campus—access to internships and local businesses is just steps away. On-campus housing is available, and access to public transportation makes off-campus living a snap.

The location of a university plays a significant role in the kinds of programs and opportunities available. Because Denver’s downtown business, shopping and entertainment district is literally steps away from the University of Colorado Denver, there are unlimited options for study, work and play.

Located in downtown Denver

Our location means you have convenient access to business, organizations and government offices, yielding hands-on, relevant learning experiences through internships and class projects.

  • Need to develop a real research plan for your marketing class?
Connect with one of the businesses downtown.
  • Need to witness first-hand how the legislature works?
    The Capitol building is nearby.
  • Need to fine-tune your student teaching skills to underserved populations?
We have wide-ranging partnerships with Denver and Aurora public schools.

A diverse student population

Because we are downtown and serve a non-traditional student population, you’ll find tremendous diversity in your fellow students. We have one of Colorado’s most diverse campuses, with 37 percent of freshman students an ethnic minority and international students from 125 countries.

Low student-faculty ratio

Here you are not a number; undergraduates receive the kind of personal attention found at most private universities. With a student-faculty ratio of 15:1 and an average class size of 29, students are known by their professors.

Challenging academic and research programs

Academic challenge is what many of our students crave, and they find it in the Chancellor’s Honors and Leaders program and in the opportunity to conduct—and receive funding for—research projects. Our annual University Research and Creative Opportunities Program gives the entire community the chance to see graduate and undergraduate research and creative activities.

Student housing adjacent to campus

And what a vibrant place to live! Campus Village, apartment-style suites adjacent to campus, are close to Denver’s extensive sporting, arts, shopping and entertainment options.

On-campus living

In an effort to improve the quality of our undergraduate experience, the Denver campus has a live-in requirement for first time freshmen and first time international students. Campus Village is far from the ordinary residence hall experience that you will find at other campuses around the state. More space, more privacy, more amenities. Campus Village at Auraria apartments have spacious layouts, perfectly designed for work, play and relaxation.

Off-campus living

Denver does not just have something for everyone. It has a lot for everyone: A lot to do outdoors, a lot of culture, a lot of diversity and a lot of spirit. It is one of the youngest and healthiest metro areas in the country, with a resilient business climate that is poised to grow with the new energy economy.

Two campuses, one university

Our students are literally in the real world every day. The university's Denver Campus holds classes on the Auraria Campus (shared with two other colleges) and in high-rise buildings along Lawrence Street in Denver's Theater District. Students in the health professions learn and practice in state-of-the-art facilities at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, including brand-new hospitals: University of Colorado Hospital and The Children's Hospital.

Living and learning in Colorado

Some students live in student housing on the Denver Campus, while most live in one of many, leafy metro-area neighborhoods. A laid-back Western ambiance prevails. Commutes are made easy by an extensive network of bicycle trails and an ever-expanding light rail and bus system.

Colorado skiing is world-renowned, but most newcomers are surprised by the mild winters on the plains. In a "good" winter, the snow falls plentifully in the mountains and occasionally blankets the metro area. With more than 300 days of sunshine, city snows don't stick around for long.

Diverse cultural events and experiences keep things lively: From the venerable National Western Stock Show and Rodeo to the Cherry Creek Arts Festival; from the Denver Broncos to the Daniel Libeskind-designed addition to the Denver Art Museum; from the nation's largest Cinco de Mayo celebration to the annual Denver Film Festival.

Since the days pioneers made this spot the capital of the Rocky Mountain West, Denver has attracted the adventurous. What better setting to launch a career?

When you want to get away, the mountains are less than an hour's drive. The Rocky Mountains are Colorado's playground all year round.

With the Rocky Mountains and numerous state and national parks, breathtaking natural beauty abounds. You’ll find countless attractions, including amusement parks, zoos and aquariums throughout the state. If you’re looking for arts and entertainment, Colorado offers renowned art collections and galleries, concert venues and live entertainment. You can also learn about the state's rich heritage by visiting the many historical sites, ancient ruins and numerous museums.

In the summer you can hike a "fourteener," camp, fish, mountain bike or visit some of the quaint towns for a nice day of shopping and an exquisite meal.

In the winter, the mountains offer downhill and cross-country skiing, sledding, ice skating, shopping and more.

While many people drive to the mountains, you can also go by train from Union Station, not even a mile from campus.

The University of Colorado Denver is committed to the safety and security of our students, faculty, staff and visitors.
