Online Learning

Accredited online education fits your busy life

 Online Learning

The Business School at UC Denver is committed to giving you a quality degree, and we understand your busy lives. Our online courses are identical in rigor and learning outcomes as the traditional campus courses. You will be learning from the same faculty who teach on campus and will receive the same quality education as our campus degree programs. Online courses simply provide a different method of delivery to best fit your schedule.

Our MS in Information Systems and our MS in Management with the Managing for Sustainability specialization are offered completely online. In addition you can elect to complete your MBA online as well with a different selection of electives. Our other degree programs also offer several online options.

Top 10 Advantages of online learning

  1. You can "attend" a course at anytime, from anywhere. Among other things, this means you can attend classes regardless of your work schedule, you can spend quality time with your family, and if you travel (for business or pleasure) you can attend class from anywhere in the world that has internet access.
  2. Online learning enables you to choose how you prefer to be taught. Everyone has their own way of learning that works best for them. Some learn visually, while others do better when they "learn by doing."
  3. Course material is accessible 24 hours a day seven days a week. You have the ability to read and re-read lectures, discussions, explanations and comments. Often spoken material in the classroom passes by due to a number of distractions, missed classes, tiredness or boredom.
  4. In an online environment, attendance to class is only evident if you actually participate in classroom discussion. This increases your interaction as well as the diversity of opinion, because everyone gets a say, not just the most talkative.
  5. Past students often comment that online learning lets them attend class when fully awake and attend in increments of convenient time block, rather than rigid two or four hour stretches once or twice a week
  6. Participating online is much less intimidating than "in the classroom." Anonymity provides you a level playing field undisturbed by bias caused by seating arrangement, gender, race and age. You can also think longer about what you want to say and add your comments when ready.
  7. There appears to be increased bonding and camaraderie over traditional class environments. Because online courses offer "chat rooms" for informal conversation, there is a conducive environment for you and your peers to discuss shared backgrounds and non-class discussions.
  8. Online classrooms also facilitate team learning by providing chatrooms and newsgroups for meetings and group projects. This eliminates the problems of mismatched schedules, finding a meeting location and distributing work for review between meetings.
  9. Professors that teach online come with practical knowledge and may be from any location across the globe. This allows you to be exposed to knowledge that cannot be learned in books and see how class concepts are applied in real world situations.
  10. The online environment makes professors more approachable. You can talk openly with your teachers through online chats, e-mail and in newsgroup discussions, without waiting for office hours that may not be convenient. This option for communication provides enhanced contact between you and your professors.

A-Typical Classroom

Just like a traditional classroom, you’re able to ask questions, share notes and make plans to study with classmates.

Your online and hybrid (courses that are offered partially on campus and partially online) courses are available through:

And just like traditional on campus courses, class sizes get smaller as you progress through your curriculum… on average, there’s typically a cap of about 40 students in core courses with about 30 students in elective courses, which ensures an intimate and personal experience.

Participation

Almost without exception, you are expected to participate in the threaded discussions. The amount of time you'll spend is determined by each instructor, and explained on the courses syllabus that lives within the course shell.

Assignments and Exams

Some professors offer weekly assignments to help ensure you are right on track with the materials being taught. Others offer papers and the typical midterm and final exams.

Exams are taken and administered in a variety of ways.

  • Administered online within your course shell with an internet browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, etc). Some are open book, others are not. You will be on your honor when taking exams.
  • As a “take home” exam where you print out a hard copy and hand it in.
  • Or in-person, where you physically go to a location which is supervised (also known as ‘proctored’).

We talked with our online students and they offered the following tips to enhance your online learning experience.

1. Assess your strengths and preferences.

Quickly recall moments when you excelled academically...

  • Were you a night owl or an early bird?
  • Were you comforted by others being around or did you prefer the peace of solitude?
  • When taking a test, did you see graphs and words, or did you hear the professor’s voice while covering a point?
  • Once you’ve analyzed your strengths, simply structure your studying accordingly.

2. Create a routine.

Though part of the benefit of an online course is that you can login whenever and wherever you want (courses are asynchronous), creating a routine is recommended.

Every morning (or every other morning depending on the class) look at your schedule for the day, and schedule a specific time to log in and view any new announcements posted by your professor (assignments, upcoming tests, etc.) or peers.

3. Participation is key.

In lieu of an actual classroom environment, online group discussions are designed to immerse you in the course and to simulate a social learning experience.

4. Read thoroughly and ask questions.

Unlike a traditional course where the professor can gauge and read their audience, that is not a possibility online. So call your professor or e-mail them if you have any questions. Professors will usually get back with you in 24hrs.

  • If you’re e-mailing a question, use a specific subject line (“BUSN 6520 – question on this week’s assignment”).
  • If you’re attaching a document, be sure that it’s in a format your professor can open.
  • And lastly, even though the e-mail you’re sending may be informal, remember that grammar and punctuation always count.

5. Mark it down.

Give yourself the best opportunity to excel in your online course by staying on top of due dates, tests and assignment deadlines.

While tuition and fees are generally the same for online students, if you live outside the state of Colorado, you may be eligible for a discounted tuition. Find more information.

Prospective and Returning out-of-state students enrolling in Denver Campus online courses:

Beginning summer 2012, the way the University of Colorado Denver charges tuition will change for out-of-state students enrolled in online classes. Non-resident UCD students without a Colorado mailing address will be eligible for a scholarship when taking online classes.

In previous semesters, out-of-state students eligible for tuition discounts were expected to enroll in a specific section of an online class and receive special permission to register in those specific sections. This created confusion for students because it was not always clear which sections were specifically created for out-of-state students. We have decided to eliminate this extra step for our online classes, and automate the out-of-state discount in the form of a scholarship for eligible students. Therefore, there is now only one section of the online classes, E01. You may automatically register for those sections. Please be aware that all other students are also enrolling in that same section, so you no longer have spaces reserved for you.

If you enroll in an online section, your tuition rate will include two lines on your bill: an out-of-state tuition rate and a scholarship for out-of-state students enrolling in online class sections. The net cost to you (the student) will be a discounted tuition rate equivalent to the normal out-of-state tuition rate.
All you have to do is enroll in the online section. You won't have to apply for the scholarship--all of that will be taken care of for you. The scholarship will be automatically applied to your student bill as soon as eligibility and enrollment are confirmed.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Linda Brooker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible?

  • You are eligible for this scholarship if you meet the following criteria:
  • Non-Resident status
  • No Colorado mailing address
  • Enrolled in an online class

When will I find out exactly what tuition will be charged to me?

Remember, the tuition line on your bill will reflect regular non-resident tuition rates. The university is working out details that will enable us to finalize the exact amount of the scholarship sometime in March, but this amount will also appear on your tuition bill as a second line, which will decrease the total amount you owe for the online course.

Do I have to do anything to apply or ensure my eligibility?

No! We will apply the scholarships to ALL eligible students' bills automatically. You don't have to do a thing.

What do I do if the scholarship doesn't appear on my bill?

Because this is a new process, there may be rare instances when the scholarship amount does not appear on your initial bill. Don't worry--your bill will be updated and you will be reimbursed for any amount paid above the discounted rate.

Will there still be a limited number of seats set aside for eligible students in each section?

As mentioned before, we are no longer limiting the number of seats for out-of-state students. Eliminating the extended studies section of each course will mean that all students, resident and non-resident, will enroll in the same section of the class. The total enrollment limit on each class will be the only limit that will apply. When the total enrollment limit is reached, the class will be closed to additional enrollment. Please register early. If you are able to enroll in an open section of an online class, the scholarship will be applied to your tuition bill, regardless of the total number of eligible students enrolled.
