From his earliest days, Stephen Katsaros' life has been filled with innovation. A mechanical engineer with a penchant for competitive ski racing, Steve began his colorful career with the invention of several commercial products for the ski industry. His first brush with "impact inventing" came in 2002 with RevoPower, a motorized wheel for bicycles. In early 2010, he came up with another bright idea - a simple, portable solar light bulb with the potential to revolutionize life for the 1.4 billion people in the world who live without access to electricity. Five months after his first sketch, Steve launched Nokero, a for-profit company that designs affordable solar technology solutions expressly for poor, off-grid communities around the world. He currently holds the title of Chief Inventor and CEO of Nokero International. Stephen has a BS in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from Purdue University, is a patent agent registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office, and was a non-degree seeking student at the Bard Center of Entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado from 1998-1999. He received the B.F. Goodrich Collegiate Inventors Award in 1995.

The CFTC has completed the process of drafting the critical rules governing the OTC derivatives market. These rules impact all energy companies, regardless of exception status. For instance, companies wanting to receive the end-user exception must provide evidence that all their derivative instruments hedge underlying business risks. Those companies seeking exception but not accustomed to the documentation requirements of hedge accounting will discover that proving qualification for the end-user exception requires a significant investment in time and resources. On the other hand, companies that do not qualify for the end-user exception must make even more difficult decisions, including whether to remain in their current line of business or to integrate vertically to take advantage of natural hedges. Dodd-Frank derivatives rules will require all swap market participants, regardless of exception status, to report swaps for market transparency purposes.
Learning outcomes
- Review the methods available for energy companies to obtain end-user exceptions to mandatory clearing of swaps
- Detail the investments necessary to prove status as an end-user on an ongoing basis
- Review the time frame to implement procedures for position swap reporting
- Understand the details of regulatory reporting requirements, including products covered, communication process, data format, and timing
- Prepare for IT system changes needed to comply with reporting requirements
- Determine the analytics required to manage the collateral risks associated with cleared trading
- Review strategic alternatives to cleared trading for non-exempt energy companies

This talk will entail describing the importance of understanding the energy value chain, how the part of the industry you are working in fits into the broader picture and capitalizing on opportunities up or down the value chain (a value chain is the segments of an industry that each in their own right create value for a business or industry). In order to be commercially pragmatic the growing liquefied natural gas industry will be used as the example to portray the attributes and the complexity of a value chain from both a technical and commercial perspective.

Colorado's history is steeped in its rich horde of natural resources. Today the state is still a major provider of minerals and energy. Because the world's mineral and energy resources are being strained to supply exploding demands, the price of nearly every natural-resource commodity has dramatically escalated in the 21stcentury.
Not only has the price of commodities increased, but the competition to simply obtain a share of these natural resources has become intense. The U.S. has already suffered from a shortage of several mineral commodities.
From cement, to steel, to fertilizers, to precious metals; the scramble for a piece of the worldwide pie is in a state the world has never known.
As America looks increasingly to alternative energy sources, we may not escape the import problem. Many of the current alternative energy technologies use a variety of imported mineral commodities, especially rare earths. The country's vulnerabilities to foreign sources of strategic mineral commodities are only beginning to be recognized.
The worldwide economic collapse of 2008-09 caused mineral prices to drop more in four months than in four years of the Great Depression. However, already the prices of most natural resources are increasing in a robust manner. This brings back the insidious, but largely hidden, inflationary pressures that were affecting us up through early 2008.
