Ken Bettenhausen
Managing Individuals & Teams, BUSN6520

Dr. Bettenhausen is an Associate Professor and Director of the MS Management program in the Business School at the University of Colorado Denver.  His educational credentials include a PhD Business Administration, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign; and a BS Business Administration, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.  He currently teaches Managing Individuals and Teams, Organization Design, and Bargaining and Negotiation.

Areas of expertise span organizational behavior, group dynamics and norm formation, and organization design.

While his pedagogical approach varies depending on what he is teaching and the type of students in the class, Dr. Bettenhausen approaches each class with four basic objectives in mind:

  • To expose students to the most current academic and practitioner thinking while helping them understand and see the value of the field's established theoretical truths
  • To develop students' critical reasoning skills
  • To help students recognize the complexity of managerial issues
  • To have students use what they are learning to address real problems

Dr. Bettenhausen has consulted with numerous organizations including US West, Neodata, USDA, and the University of Colorado Executive Programs.

Wayne Cascio

Managing People in Global Markets, INTB6040

Dr. Cascio is a faculty member of the Business School and is the Robert H. Reynolds Chair in Global Leadership, Management.  He teaches in the 11-Month MBA, the Professional MBA, and Executive MBA programs, as well as doctoral-level courses.

Courses taught include: Managing People in Global Markets, Valuing and Costing Human Resources, Managing People in the Global Energy Environment, Research Methods in International Business, Managing Global Talent, Statistics for Business and Economic Decisions, Multinational Management, Human Resources Management, Managing People for Competitive Advantage, Compensation Administration, Organizational Behavior, Staffing, Training and Development, Management and Leadership, Visionary Leadership and Change Management. 

Recognized as a thought leader both in the US and globally, areas of expertise include staffing, training, performance management, compensation, organizational restructuring, and the economic impact of HR activities.  Dr. Cascio is the author or co-author of ten textbooks, and has authored and been published in dozens of book chapters, cases, encyclopedia entries, journals, technical reports, papers and symposia, and media.

David Chandler

David Chandler is an Assistant Professor of Management and Co-Director of the Managing for Sustainability Program at the University of Colorado Denver (david.chandler@ucdenver.edu). His broad area of research interest lies at the dynamic interface between the organization and its institutional environment. He is also interested in the relationship between institutions and values, and how firm actions reflect values that sustain meaningful institutions. Empirically, he focuses on studying organizations within the context of corporate social responsibility, business ethics, and firm/stakeholder relations. Related publications include the textbook Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility (3rd edition, Sage, 2013). He received his Ph.D. in Management from the University of Texas at Austin.

Gary Colbert

Managerial Accounting, ACCT6070

Dr. Colbert is an Associate Professor of Accounting and Director of the 11-Month MBA program. He teaches Entrepreneurship: Launching New Technology Ventures, Seminar in Managerial Accounting, Managerial Accounting and Control (Executive MBA), Managerial Accounting (MBA elective), Graduate Financial and Managerial Accounting Principles (MBA requirement), Auditing, Advanced Auditing Theory, Advanced Cost Accounting, Intermediate Financial Accounting, and Accounting Information Systems.

Educational credentials include a PhD, Accounting, University of Oregon; MS, Accounting, University of Oregon; and BA, Psychology, California State University, Chico.

Areas of expertise include auditing, financial reporting, managerial accounting and control, and entrepreneurship. Dr. Colbert's professional experience includes Audit Manager, Deloitte and Touche (formerly Deloitte Haskins & Sells), San Francisco, 1979-85; and Staff Accountant, Aus Accountancy Corp., Chico, California, 1978-79.

John Daley

Financial Management, BUSN6640

Dr. Daley is an Instructor of Finance in the Business School.  His educational background includes PhD, Finance and Business Economics, University of Washington; MBA, University of Colorado, Denver; MM, Trombone, University of Southern California; and AB, Psychology, Stanford University.

Courses taught in the Business School - Investment Management Analysis, Financial Modeling, and Seminar in Behavioral Finance.

Dr. Daley's teaching philosophy is one that strives to introduce students to a variety of intellectual financial tools and skills and then foster a supportive environment in which they learn to apply these tools and skills to decisions in their personal and professional lives.

Dr. Daley's musical accomplishments include Principal Trombone with the Colorado Symphony.

Tiffany Espinosa

Emerging Trends and Business Planning, BUSN6800

Ms. Espinosa is a faculty member at the Business School at the University of Colorado Denver's Bard Center for Entrepreneurship, Managing for Sustainability Program, and the 11-Month MBA Program as well as for the Cultural Sustainability Program at Goucher College. She teaches classes in social entrepreneurship, innovation, business planning, strategy, management, and action research. Her research and teaching interests are in community wealth development, capacity building, public-private partnership and risk management.

She has worked in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. Her experience spans across industries, including health, education, construction, and corporate litigation. She has worked for both entrepreneurial companies and large established corporations. This breadth of hands-on experience gives her insights that enable her to engage effectively across sectors.

Ms. Espinosa has a long history of being actively engaged in civic and professional activities. Some of her more recent activities include: fundraising for National Mill Dog Rescue, session moderator for the Center for Non Profit Success, assistant teacher for Girls Inc. of Denver, and business coaching for SafeHouse, El Centro Humanitario, and YouthBiz. She is a 2007 graduate of Leadership Denver.  She consults and does public speaking on socially responsible business, entrepreneurship, non-profit business models, and leadership.

Ms. Espinosa is working on a PhD in Natural Resources and International Development from Colorado State University. She received her MBA and a MA in Education from the University of Colorado Denver and an undergraduate degree in Social Sciences from the University of Michigan.  She lives in Denver with her husband, and their four-legged furry kids.

David Forlani
Stefanie K. Johnson Building on his experiences running a number of small businesses, Professor Forlani enjoys teaching courses that focus on the planning and implementation of marketing programs, especially as they relate to new-business creation decisions. Forlani sees meaningful learning as involving the integration of theory and practice, and has designed his courses to expose students to the logic entailed in various courses of action along with the opportunity to enact and support their choices. He also believes strongly in the appropriate use of quantification in marketing decisions and makes numerical analysis an integral element in his classes.
Mike Harper

Management of Operations, BUSN6630

Dr. Harper is a Senior Instructor of Decision Sciences in the Business School. His educational credentials include - Ph.D. and M.S. in Operations Research and Statistics, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; M.S. in Mathematics, University of Tulsa; and a B.S. in Geophysical Engineering, Colorado School of Mines.

Dr. Harper has taught the following courses in the University of Colorado Denver Business School: Data Analysis for Managers, Management of Operations, Decision Modeling, Quality and Productivity, Project Management, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, and Business Statistics.

Areas of expertise operations management applied to business and business statistics. Dr. Harper's teaching philosophy is a traditional approach that includes: lectures to present tools, techniques, and strategy; assignments to develop knowledge and skill; and case studies or projects to challenge application in a business environment. Evaluation includes graded assignments and exams. His most recent research focuses on empirical research in perceived risk, inventory analysis, and business statistics.

Dr. Harper's professional history includes: Staff member at Los Alamos National Laboratory where research included nuclear containment at Nevada Test Site, microearthquake research, tsunami research, rock mechanics and fragmentation of oil shale, decision modeling, and bayesian statistics; Vice-president at Professional Geophysics Incorporated where consulting included software development and project management.

His teaching experience spans several institutions including the University of Denver college of business, Denver Seminary counseling department, Colorado School of Mines mathematics department, and University of Colorado at Denver business school.

Madhaven Parthasarathy

Marketing Management, BUSN6560

Dr. Parthasarathy is an associate Professor of marketing at the University of Colorado Denver. He teaches New Product Development, Internet Marketing, and Marketing Research and Marketing Management. In addition he has taught Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship and Marketing a New Business at the Bard Center. His research interests focus on customer retention, switching and discontinuance behavior, and the diffusion of new products. He has published in such journals as Information Systems Research, International Marketing Review, and the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science.

Dr. Parthasarathy's goal is to provide a well-balanced yet challenging educational experience to students. In addition to a solid conceptual foundation, he brings in high-profile and experienced guest speakers, involve students with real-world case studies, and organize projects that students often conduct for local companies. He also tries to organize and encourage students to participate in networking events and other activities that make them more marketable to prospective employers. Finally, he tries to make the educational process an enjoyable experience for students because he firmly believes that one learns best when one is immersed in the subject matter.

Barbara Pelter

Applied Economics for Managers, BUSN6620

Dr. Pelter is a Senior Instructor of Finance in the Business School. Her academic credentials include PhD(ABD), Economics, University of California, Davis; MS, Economics, University of Denver; and BS, University of Nebraska, Omaha.

Courses taught include: Applied Managerial Economics, Macroeconomics and the Financial System, Russian On-site Study Course, and Emerging Market Economies/Central and Eastern Europe.
Areas of expertise span - transition economies: Russia and Central and Eastern Europe; economic development with a focus on education, health care and gender issues; and business response to long-term international health crises.

Dr. Pelter's teaching philosophy is to help shape educated people, people who will contribute to their profession and their community; and the essence of her teaching method is to provide information and a space for discussion in a respectful and caring manner.

Professor Pelter has been teaching economics for over 15 years. With an interest in economic development in transition economies, she developed and taught courses on Central and Eastern Europe and Russia. The Russian course involved study both on campus and on-site in Russia. In addition to her academic interest and teaching in Russia, she has developed a business doing work in Russia as well as other transition and developing economies.

With the increasing demand for online teaching, Professor Pelter has developed and teaches an online managerial economics course. She is in the process of designing her second online course.

John Ruhnka

Legal & Ethical Environment of Business, BUSN6540

Dr. John Ruhnka is the Bard Family Term Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado Denver Business School, where he teaches in the areas of Entrepreneurship, International Business, and Legal Issues of Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Ruhnka received his MBA in Finance from the Wharton Graduate Division at the University of Pennsylvania and his JD from Yale University. He was also awarded an LLM degree from Cambridge University. Prior to entering academia, he practiced securities law at Lord Day & Lord in New York and was a securities law partner in a large Denver law firm, where he specialized in structuring and financing startup businesses and initial public offerings for new ventures.

Dr. Ruhnka has published numerous articles on venture capital investing and other topics in The Journal of Business Venturing, Harvard Business Review, CPA Journal, and other business publications. He has received numerous teaching awards and was twice selected as Outstanding Teacher of the Year for the University of Colorado Denver.

Manuel Serapio

Introduction to International Business, INTB6000

Dr. Manuel Serapio, Jr., is an Associate Professor of Management and International Business and the Program Director of the MS in International Business. He also serves as the faculty director of the Center for International Business Education and Research at CU Denver.

Professor Serapio's research and teaching interests focus on international business, cross-border research and development, the globalization of services, and international entrepreneurship. He recently designed and developed the first faculty development program in international entrepreneurship (to be offered by the CIBERs at CU Denver and Indiana University). In 2001, Professor Serapio first developed and offered the international entrepreneurship course, with the objective of teaching international business from an entrepreneurial and deal-making perspective.

Dr. Serapio is the author/editor of three books, four technical reports for the US Department of Commerce and over a dozen articles. His publications have appeared in leading journals, such as Management International Review, Organizational Dynamics, Research Policy, Academy of Management Executive, Asian Business Management, IEEE Spectrum, and Research Technology Management. His work has been cited or published in The Financial Times, Entrepreneur Magazine, Investor's Business Daily, The Rocky Mountain News, The Denver Business Journal, Nikkei Weekly (Japan), and The Los Angeles Times.

In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Serapio has lectured for or consulted for international organizations and multinational companies in the US and Asia. These include IBM Corporation, Lockheed Martin, First Data, StorageTek, Molson Coors Brewing Company and others. He has also coauthored several grant applications that have received over $4 million in funding for UCD.

Dr. Serapio received a PhD in International Business from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an MBA from the University of Hawaii and an undergraduate degree from Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines. He received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in the Business School in 1990-1991.

Marlene Smith

Data Analysis for Managers, BUSN6530

Professor Smith is an Associate Professor of Decision Sciences and Director of the Decision Sciences program in the Business School. Her educational credentials include: PhD Economics, University of Florida; MA Economics, University of Florida; and BA Mathematics and Economics, Denison University. She teaches Data Analysis for Managers, Business Statistics, Business Forecasting, and Discrete Event Simulation Models. Areas of expertise are modeling and applied statistics.

Dr. Smith's teaching philosophy recognizes that statistics is a subject that lends itself well to the business curriculum. Unfortunately, the subject has been dreaded by generations of business students. Its reputation is one of meaningless mathematics and irrelevance to the practice of business. In her mind, that age-old perception is valid. For example, business managers almost never need to perform tests about a single population mean; yet, traditional business statistics courses use this situation to illustrate the foundations of statistical thinking.

Two things strike Professor Smith as being fundamental to any successful business statistics course. First, the material must cover statistical topics that students will likely find in the workplace. Second, the mathematics of statistics must not supplant hands-on analysis and interpretation of real data. Without these two components, the business statistics course is destined to remain on the heap of irrelevant "cut" courses.

Areas of research include data analysis, nonstationary Markov Models, statistical issues in human resources management, non-nested model selection, and research in teaching business statistics.

Eric Thompson

Information Technology, BUSN6610

Mr. Thompson is a Senior Instructor of Information Systems Management in the Business School. His educational credentials include - MS Information Systems, University of Colorado-Denver; MS Geology, University of Texas; and BA Geology, Trinity University (Texas).

Courses taught include: Business Systems Design; Business Programming with C; Business Programming with C#; Business Programming and Data Structures (C++); Fundamentals of Information Systems Theory & Practice; Information Technology Hardware & Software; and Technology Management.

Mr. Thompson's professional history reflects the mining roots of Colorado: Exploration Geologist, Forest Oil, Co., Denver, Colorado; Exploration Geologist, Chevron Corp., Englewood, Colorado; Exploration/Minerals Geologist, Minatome Corp., Denver, Colorado; and Exploration Geologist, Placid Oil Co., Denver, Colorado.
