Shelley Hitt has been the Colorado State Long – Term Care Ombudsman since May, 2008. The office of the Colorado State Long- Term Care Ombudsman is located within the Legal Center for People with Disabilities and Older People. Prior to becoming State Ombudsman, she was the Section Director for Allied Health at the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, with responsibility for the licensing of 16 allied health professions. She also served nine years as the program manager for long –term care at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment with responsibility for survey and certification activities in Colorado nursing homes.
In addition, she worked in two long term care facilities and practiced elder law before becoming a volunteer ombudsman in 1995. She has been involved in elder law and elder rights issues for over 16 years. She received her undergraduate degree in social work from Michigan State University and her law degree from the University of Colorado. She is licensed to practice law in Colorado.
