Heart of Medicine

The Hergott Heart of Medicine Writing Workshops & Awards

Practicing the art of medicine requires much more than just scientific expertise; sustaining a long medical career requires physicians to find and maintain meaning in their work. Burnout remains high among attending physicians and trainees. Narrative medicine can bring meaning to the practice of medicine, mitigate burnout and translate into scholarship. This project seeks to enhance the practice and prominence of narrative medicine among internal medicine residents by creating a system of rewards as well as a pathway for scholarship for this creative work.

Dr. Lawrence Hergott is an esteemed cardiologist and Professor in the University of Colorado Department of Medicine.  He is held in the highest regard both locally and nationally.  Voted a 5280 best doctor by his peers in response to the question, "Which physician would you trust to treat you and your family?"  He is respected for his excellent patient care and exemplary professionalism and is a prolific writer and poet.
