Hawaii Geology Field Study for Teachers

The beautiful and diversified Hawaiian Islands will provide the natural classroom for this course. Clear tropical seas, colorful coral reefs, and endless expanses of beach and volcanic landscape will offer an exciting place to study geological activities.  You’ll observe and experience geological field studies first-hand, beyond the textbook. And, the course topic is approached in a holistic way by including associated issues of biology, botany and anthropology.

The course itinerary will include:

  • An in-depth exploration of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with its world famous Kilauea Crater, the Halemaumau Fire Pit, Sulfur Banks, Puu Oo Oo, and Steam Vents. Hike along the crater, to the present eruption site and into lava tubes and a tour of the Geological Survey’s Volcano Observatory will originate from our base in the Park.
  • A drive down the Chain of Craters Road to observe recent lava beach formation and shoreline erosion with sea arches, sea stacks and black, green and white sand beaches.
  • A visit to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden and Lava Tree State Park
  • A hike to the top of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea Observatory using 4 wheel drive jeeps.
  • A stop at the 420-foot Akaka Falls with a walk through the jungle to its spectacular view will provide an arena for a discussion of soil formation.
  • Snorkeling and scuba diving (both optional) to examine reef structure and wave action.
  • A visit to Waimea Canyon the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”’ the Wet and Dry Caves,and a hike and optional kayaking the Hanalei River will highlight our time on Kauai.

The travel cost of the program including airfare, land costs for lodging, automobile, jeep, entrance fees for park and Hawaii Botanical Gardens, and all taxes* except a Hawaii road tax is: $2799 per person double occupancy

  • Airlines: United Airlines- Denver International to Kona and Lihue to DIA

Hawaiian Air- Kona to Lihue

  • Accommodations: Hawaii- 4 nights at the Aloha Retreat and Lodge
  • Admission to Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens and Volcano National Park
  • 5 nights at the Royal Kona Hotel, Kailua-Kona, parking fee included.
  • Kauai- 4 nights at Resort Quest Kauai Beach at Makaiwa Kapaa, parking and breakfast included
  • Both Islands- Hawaii & Kauai, compact 4 door (one car per room)
  • Jeep Wranglers, for one day on Hawaii (4 per jeep.)
  • Tuition: $110 per credit – 3 credits. (Spouses and children do not need to register.)
  • *All hotel tax and portage fee’s included. Rate includes federal air tax. Rates do not include gas, insurance or local road tax (assessed when picking up cars.)

Deposit: $600.00 per person good faith deposit. A credit card may be used.
