Study Program to Guanajuato, Mexico

Upcoming trips are anticipated for summer, 2012. No trips are scheduled in 2011.

The University of Colorado Denver's Linguistically Diverse Education program is delighted to offer a study trip featuring intensive Spanish language study in the charming colonial city of Guanajuato. Instructors Mary Anna Cusick and Patsy Jaynes will guide you on a journey that will include host family experiences, a school/classroom visit, community involvement and cultural visits. If you are a teacher who works regularly with English language learners, this could be an excellent opportunity to augment your understanding of education and culture in Mexico, as well as learning/living in the context of a second language.

It is competitive to participate in this program. Admission is limited to 12 spots. Credits for this course count as elective credit for our Linguistically Diverse Education MA program. Teachers who want to use the course credits for re-certification should check with their district's ESL/bilingual coordinator.

You’ll have three classroom meetings prior to the excursion, where you will discuss linguistically diverse education, cultural norms, and trip preparation information. The group will meet at Denver International Airport on June 5, 2010 to begin the trip; returning on June 20th.

Air travel is arranged by participants. For this trip, you must have a valid U.S. passport. If you're not a U.S. citizen, please check to see what you will need to be able to cross the Mexico border.

There will be intensive small classroom instruction in Spanish four hours each morning. Participants will have home stays with two meals per day giving them additional opportunities for Spanish language interaction. Afternoon and evening cultural events are also available.

Following the trip, a gathering will be arranged to review the trip experiences.
