Mathematical Content Knowledge for Teaching Certificate

CU Denver is offering a certificate program focused, first and foremost, on augmenting practicing teachers’ mathematical content knowledge for teaching. Each course is organized to fit teachers at all K-12 school grade levels, including mathematics and special education teachers. Major themes for each course are informed by national and state standards, particularly the new Colorado Common Core Standards. Each course will engage the participating teachers in exploring and expanding their own comprehension of the topics while examining and increasing their understanding of how students develop such knowledge.

Each course stands alone; you may want to take one class or all three. Courses may be taken in any order.

All courses are three graduate credit hours. Tuition is $373/credit, plus student fees.

Courses Term Offered
​​​MTED 5621: A World of (Different) Numbers: Quantity and Operation
This course develops K-12 teachers’ understanding of number systems and the ability to foster students’ understanding. Focus will be on number, quantity, and operation. It is applicable to teaching students at all grade levels in line with the K-12 Common Core Standards.
Summer
MTED 5622: Expanding Conceptions of Algebra
This course develops K-12 teachers’ understanding of algebra concepts and the ability to foster students’ understanding. Focus will be on equivalence, variable, covariation, and function. It is applicable to teaching students at all grade levels in line with the K-12 Common Core Standards.
Fall
MTED 5623: Geometrical Ways of Reasoning
This course develops K-12 teachers’ geometrical reasoning and the ability to foster students’ reasoning. It addresses transformation, measurement, classification, objects, imagery, formulas, and investigation. It is applicable to teaching students at all grade levels in line with the K-12 Common Core Standards.
