Kara Showalter Luckey

Education and Work Experience

Kara Luckey is a PhD Candidate in the College of Architecture and Planning at the University of Colorado, where her work is focused on the relationship between urban infrastructure and community development.  She is currently engaged in research related to neighborhood change processes, residential location decision-making, transportation and housing equity, and public transit’s role as a community and economic development tool.  Kara is the recipient of a fellowship in Sustainable Urban Infrastructure through the National Science Foundation’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program.  She holds a B.S.E. in Civil Engineering from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, the well-regarded art, architecture, and engineering design school in New York City, and has over seven years of experience in the planning field in which she worked in a range of contexts including transit and transportation planning, urban revitalization, waterfront redevelopment, and planning for public and federal lands.


Kara’s current research relates to infrastructure and behaviors that enhance sustainability, livability and healthy communities, with a focus on transit-specific contexts. She is interested in a variety of related topics including:

      • Understanding lived experiences of place, the social meaning embedded in place, and how socio-cultural contexts can inform place-making and improvements to quality of life 

      • Use of transit as a community-building tool

      • Community change related to public investment and economic development efforts
