Andrew Pattison


 

Andy Pattison received his B.A. in Biology from Skidmore College in 1999 and went on to work as a conservation biologist for The Nature Conservancy in New York and Colorado specializing in butterfly habitat protection. In 2007 he received his Master in Public Administration (MPA) program with a focus in environmental policy, management, and law at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD) School of Public Affairs while working at the Wirth Chair in Sustainable Development Policy as a policy researcher and advocate. In that same year he was awarded a National Science Foundation IGERT grant to pursue his PhD at UCD’s School of Public Affairs through the interdisciplinary Sustainable Urban Infrastructure program. During the next four years of classes and dissertation proposal efforts, Andy was also a member of the Center for Sustainable Infrastructure Systems at UCD working on teams completing the first greenhouse gas inventories and climate action plans for local governments in Colorado. Andy also taught classes in the MPA program, including “Governance and Institutions", "Public Administration and Public Service” and “Environmental Politics and Policy”. 

His research interests include: local climate and sustainability policy, policy process theories, the role of science and technical information in policy-making, and issues of urban social equity. He has presented at many national academic conferences and published articles in: Environmental Science & Policy, the Journal of Industrial Ecology, and the Canadian Political Science Review. He has articles forthcoming in Society & Natural Resources and Policy Studies Journal, as well as a chapter in a forthcoming book on climate change and issues of urban race, class, and gender inequalities which he wrote with his wife, a Sociology PhD candidate at UCSB. He’ll be defending his dissertation in 2014. 

In addition to his academic work, Andy has worked on dozens of state and national political campaigns. In 2009 he was a fellow in the Center for Progressive Leadership's State Political Fellows Program and the Denver Community Leadership Forum. For years Andy also served on the Board of Directors of New Era Colorado, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering political awareness and activity among young adults in Colorado, and the Board of Directors of Colorado Conservation Voters, a non-profit organization that works to educate the public about the conservation positions of candidates and elected official and to hold elected officials accountable for their environmental records. 

In 2010 & 2011 Andy also worked as the Sustainability Director for the Auraria Higher Education Center, where he directed all greenhouse gas inventory work, climate action planning, and other sustainability projects and on the Auraria Campus - the largest urban campus in the nation. He was appointed in 2010 by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter to the Pollution Prevention Advisory Board, which provides overall policy guidance, coordination and advice to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment on pollution prevention activities. 

In late 2011 Andy moved to Santa Barbara to join his partner Chandra who was beginning her doctorate at UCSB. Andy worked as a Senior Planner in the Sustainability and Climate Change team for Pacific Municipal Consultants leading greenhouse gas inventories and climate action planning project for local governments and clients before leaving to launch his own consulting company. Andy has worked as a consultant to dozens of local governments, companies, and nonprofits on climate action and sustainability planning. He is an accredited LEED Green Associate and a member of the California Association of Environmental Professionals. 

Andy has been teaching as an Adjunct Faculty member here at California Lutheran University in the Master in Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) program since May 2012 and became a full-time faculty member in August 2013. Andy teaches classes such as “Public Administration & Policy”, “Sustainable Development Policy”, “Organizational Theory and Development”, "Research Methods", and "Energy & Climate Change Policy in Local Government".

He is an avid fly-fisherman, hiker, backpacker, surfer, snowboarder, birdwatcher, naturalist, and plays ultimate Frisbee. He managed to camp & fly-fish in all of the lower 48 states before he turned 30 - and he has some very specific plans for Alaska & Hawaii in the next four years.
