Dr. Brian J. Gerber is an Associate Professor and the Executive Director of the Buechner Institute for Governance, which is located in the School of Public Affairs,
University of Colorado Denver. He received his PhD from Stony Brook University (SUNY) in 2000. His research specialization areas include disaster management, homeland security policy and administration, and environmental regulatory policy. He has published articles in journals such as Public Administration Review, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Political Research Quarterly, Policy Studies Journal, State Politics and Policy Quarterly, Public Finance and Management, Public Performance and Management Review and Urban Affairs Review. Previously, he has served as Research Director for the Stephenson Disaster Management Institute at Louisiana State University, has been a Research Associate with West Virginia University’s Regional Research Institute, was a Research Fellow with the National Science Foundation’s “Next Generation of Hazards Researchers” program and has served as a subject matter expert on a variety of projects. At present he is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Policy Studies Journal and is a member of Denver’s Board of Environmental Health. His publications with co-authors received national research article-of-the-year awards in 2008 and 2009.
Dr. Gerber has extensive experience performing policy analysis and evaluation work for state and local government agencies. He has garnered over $2.8 million via research grants since 1999 and recently completed a study funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) that examines homeland security policy implementation at the local government level. Gerber is currently the principal investigator for a study funded by the U.S. Department of Education that explores the unique needs of people with disabilities during disaster evacuations. Likewise, he is also currently principal investigator for a second NSF-funded grant looking at disaster evacuation management issues in the U.S.
