Certificate in Domestic Violence Studies

There are two certificates offered by the Center on Domestic Violence at the School of Public Affairs.  For information on the Certificate in Domestic Violence Studies, see the details below.  For more information on the Certificate in Interpersonal Violence and Health Care, please click here.

Few academic institutions across the country offer an opportunity for concentrated studies in the area of domestic violence.   As the Program on Domestic Violence (PDV) developed, individuals participating in degree programs outside of the University of Colorado Denver, as well as, faculty and students from a number of CU schools and departments requested access to the School of Public Affairs (SPA) courses on domestic violence. Workers in the domestic violence field who have already attained a masters degree, also questioned whether the domestic violence courses could be made available in some formal way to non degree seeking students. The Certificate in Domestic Violence Studies was created in response to those requests

Target audiences for the PDV Certificate are practitioners within domestic violence service and advocacy organizations with advanced education and individuals in a wide variety of professional disciplines that work with a high percentage of domestic violence victims (e.g. police, attorneys, nurses, therapists, dentists, etc.).

The certificate is titled, the Certificate in Domestic Violence Studies. Five courses comprise the certificate. Those courses are:

  • PUAD 5910: Women and Violence: A Sociological Perspective*
  • PUAD 5920: Psychology of Domestic Violence*
  • PUAD 5930: Battered Women and the Legal System*
  • PUAD 5940: Domestic Violence Advocacy and Social Change*
  • Elective of their Choice ( The course should support the student’s academic and/or career goals, 3 semester credit hours.)

*Courses are provided in an intensive/cohort format.
