Welcome to the School of Public Affairs International Visiting Scholar Information page.   SPA considers visiting scholar applications from individuals who currently hold a faculty or administrative appointment to an institution in their home country (Academic Visiting Scholars) or from persons who currently work for a government agency or nonprofit organization (Research Visiting Scholars).  International Visiting Scholars are housed at SPA for periods ranging from six months to two years.

Unfortunately, we have limited space, so we must limit our International Visiting Scholars to those who most closely fit the following requirements:

• An outstanding record of research and/or service (applications from Fulbright Scholars are welcomed)
• A research agenda that aligns with research interests of current SPA faculty (with preference given to those who have already arranged to conduct research with individual SPA faculty)
• Strong spoken and written English language skills
• A willingness to facilitate future partnerships between SPA and the scholar’s home country/agency
• Sufficient funding to meet the requirements of the UCD Office of International Affairs and the U.S. government

Please note that Research Visiting Scholars must pay a fee to the School of Public Affairs, in addition to other funding that may be required by the university or the government.  Academic Visiting Scholars are not subject to this fee.  All International Visiting Scholars must meet the funding sufficiency guidelines for J-1 scholars and J-2 dependents, described at http://www.ucdenver.edu/academics/InternationalPrograms/OIA/ISSS/HRImmigrationAdministrator/Pages/J-1Scholar.aspx. 

Currently SPA has five Visiting Scholars in residence, all from Korea:

• Mr. Jinil Jeong is conducting research on local government.
• Mr. Soo Yeon Lee is conducting research on non-profits and museum management.
• Ms. Hyun Sook Lee is working with SPA faculty member Dr. Mary Guy on research involving emotional labor in public agencies.
• Ms. Nan Young Lee, from the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, is conducting research on education reform with SPA faculty member Dr. Brian Gerber and Dr. Mary Klute, Director of Research for the Buechner Institute for Governance.
• Ms. Chae Sook Ma is conducting research on local government practices and policies.

In the summer of 2012, Professor Luis Sanz-Menendez and Professor Laura Castro-Cruz from the CSIC Institute of Public Goods and Policies in Spain will collaborate with SPA faculty member Dr. Chris Weible on policy process issues related to science and technology.   In December of 2012, Ms. Xiaojun Lv from China is scheduled to come to SPA and conduct research on emotional labor with SPA faculty Member Dr. Mary Guy.

In 2010 SPA hosted Professor Daniel Nohrstedt from Sweden, who collaborated with SPA faculty members Dr. Chris Weible and Dr. Brian Gerber on emergency management policy.
