Occupational Health Psychology Overview
Students will experience a broad education in psychology, including a practicum or fieldwork, as well as interdisciplinary training in epidemiology and ergonomics. Occupational Health Psychology takes a comprehensive view of the work environment. The includes examining the leadership and cultures in an organization, how work is scheduled, what work-related factors increase or reduce employee stressors and strains, and the effects of job characteristics on employee well-being.
OHP trainees are required to complete coursework in occupational health, conduct research in occupational health psychology, participate in multidisciplinary applied occupational health projects, and present at workshops and professional conferences.
What Does an Occupational Health Psychologist Do?
- Helps organizations understand the links between occupational stressors and employees' mental and physical well-being.
- Works with organizations to:
- Improve the work environment
- Prevent or reduce sources of job-related stress to improve worker well-being and productivity
- Minimize employee absenteeism and turnover
- Assess the effectiveness of organizational interventions, such as assistance and workplace wellness programs
- Works in roles such as Consultant, Occupational Health Psychologist, Research Scientist, Research Psychologist, and Program Evaluation Specialist.
The OHP program is a PhD program. Students entering the program will have both a Master of Science (MS) and a PhD in psychology upon completion. If a Master's was already attained, students will complete the program with a PhD.
Students must be admitted to one of the five psychology doctoral programs listed below in order to apply for training in Occupational Health Psychology.

The OHP Training Program is currently directed by Dr. Gwen Fisher (Industrial/Organizational Psychology), with Dr. Lorann Stallones (Occupational Epidemiologist) serving as the Assistant Director. Other faculty with significant contributions include Dr. John Rosecrance (Ergonomics), Dr. Kimberly Henry (Prevention and Statistics), Jeanette (Jan) Cleveland, Dan Ganster, and Dan Graham. Dr. Tori Crain is new to the faculty as of August 2015. Other collaborators include faculty from the Department of Psychology, Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences, College of Business, Department of Construction Management, Department of Human Development and Family Studies, Department of Journalism and Technical Communication, as well as OHP Advisory Board Members.
Graduate research assistantships are available on a competitive basis to qualified students. The number of assistantships may vary from year to year depending on the level of research funding.
How to Apply
All OHP trainees must first be admitted to the M.S.-Ph.D. program in psychology through one of the five psychology doctoral programs:
