Improving Health Care Delivery Data Project

Creating an Indian Health Service data infrastructure to provide critical information on health status, utilization, and treatment costs

The Improving Health Care Delivery Data Project (IHS Data Project) will create an Indian Health Service data infrastructure to provide critical information on health status, utilization and treatment costs.  The data for this project will be used in comparative effectiveness research on strategies for providing education, case management, and disease management for American Indian and Alaska Natives with diabetes or heart disease.  Project findings will inform IHS in the identification and prioritization of effective strategies for chronic disease management to improve health outcomes.  IHS Data Project runs through September 2012.

Project Goals

  1. Develop a new data infrastructure to provide critical information about IHS health service utilization and treatment costs, and for use in comparative effectiveness research. Longitudinal datasets will be created by extracting and linking electronic medical and cost information from the IHS National Data Warehouse and other relevant IHS sources. These data will be used to analyze health status, health service utilization patterns, and treatment costs for persons with diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease to identify efficient and effective diagnosis, prevention, and treatment methods to improve health outcomes for American Indian and Alaska Natives.
  2. Conduct a comparative effectiveness study (CER) to identify effective strategies for providing education, case management, and disease management to reduce cardiovascular disease risk among American Indian and Alaska Natives with diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease.
