Special Topics: Health and Human Rights

CBHS 6670 | 3 credits

Examine the relationship between health and human rights, with an emphasis on the principles that form the foundation for contemporary and distinct approaches to the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

It was not until the 1980's that the separate fields of health and human rights began to recognize their shared interests. During this time, the rights of the most vulnerable populations began to be codified in an array of human rights treaties.  At the same time, emerging issues within the health field concerning reproductive health, violence against women and children, and later HIV/AIDS began to illuminate the commonalities of these two fields.

Today, the relationship between health and human rights is viewed by many academics and practitioners as mutually reinforcing and synergistic. The increased emphasis on health and human rights is further reflected in the actions and priorities of the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and many non-governmental organizations.
